AEM CAI or Comptech IceBox?
is there a big difference between the two considering the comptech costs about 300 where the aem costs 175. im not looking for tremendous gains just something that gives me something in low and high end. i read the aem has great high end gains but the comptech is the best in mid range. my question is the comptech worth it? also, how reliable is the bypass valve to prevent water in the engine? thanks
I was faced with the same choice earlier this year. I went with the AEM- Comptech, although a superior product, warrants a higher price tag which I did not feel like spending. Another thing you can do is to make a DIY icebox. Patrick94GSR did this.

the aem has a mid-range hump....
having owned the two I definately say Comptech. Just buy the Icebox + filter (leave your stock airhose).
you can check my site for a little writeup and search here because there's been about 4 threads on this topic just yesterday.

why keep stock airhose; price? will getting the alum one (even a cheap arm from ebay) be better??

doesn't aem include aluminum rails? if these rails attract heat doesnt it defeat the purpose of a cold air intake? what do you mean a mid range hump?
fuel rails don't have anything to do with your cold air intake. AEM's high volume fuel rails simply allow more fuel to be delivered to the engine when needed to increase throttle response. This has absolutely nothing to do with your CAI. Your Intake takes in air...not fuel.
At least one person on the board said they sucessfully adapted a cheap short ram to fit with the icebox, which would save some money. You'll have to find out which brands work and what, if any modifications are required
Anybody know why Iceman intakes went out of business? Weren't they just as good as Injen and AEM, but more versatile (short ram+cold air) and insulated the air since it was made of plastic? Would anyone pick Iceman over Comptech or AEM? Iceman - 150; AEM - 175; Comptech - 300+...

I did a review of the comptech icebox a few weeks ago; if you do a search you might be able to find it.
If you're really strapped for cash, then the ONLY reason to get the icebox over the AEM is because AEM's bypass valve causes some power loss. AEM has never released a dyno of their CAI with the bypass valve installed but people who have put on the bypass valve and done a subsequent dyno with it lost a few wheel hp (I want to say 5 whp) versus without the bypass valve.
Comptech's icebox is not supposed to hydrolock; one member of this board managed to hydrolock his type-R with the icebox but comptech bought him a new engine.
The comptech icebox can be used with the stock intake; you'll need to change out the filter though. It's still quite pricey, but you get what you pay for.

if i don't use the comptech arm and use the stock ruber arm am i sacrificing any power?? would i beable to use a K&N filter for the icebox??
I know this topic comes up all the time and I don't mean to prolong it, but I was wondering the same thing as Lildragun. If I use my stock intake tube w/ the icebox will I sacrifice any power? TIA
