Default Video game cockpit build.

Alright, I admit it, I enjoy a good racing video game now and then. But I'm frustrated by how hard it is to play with those stupid hand held controls. Up, down, triangle, square, r1... *UGH!!!!!*..... That's NO WAY TO RACE!!!

My son picked up a nicer steering wheel combo so when I did a bit of racing with him, I bitched less.. Good lad! Problem is we balanced it on the coffee table, or held the wheel in your lap, peddles scooting around the carpet, etc. It was better, but still was not what it could be.

SO, I decided my son and I needed to whip up a PROPER racing cockpit! Complete with fully adjustable seat out of my Civic. Not sure what seat it came out of originally (if you know, drop me a PM).

And most dads know, if you have a chance to spend some good quality time with your kids on a project your both enjoy, well, you don't want to miss out.

And it's a chance to get him out to the shop for some much needed fabrication time. So I'm really having a good time, and here's the build. Enjoy.

The build criteria:
a) Must fit through any of the door ways in my house, 34" max, assembly is 30" wide.
b) Must accommodate all of our family friends. From my daughters scrawny 90 pound friends, to my 400 buddy. All must be able to enjoy a good race.
c) Can't weigh over 120 pounds, must be able to be moved by one person.
d) Will be powder coated when done.
e) Must be "trick" in a few ways that nobody has thought about, so that when it's stuck in my living room, and my wife is pissed about how long it's been there, I can still think to myself... "yea, but look at it!!!..."

Base, squared up and welded.

Got the sides for the seat mounts on.

We tried to make it work perfectly with the existing factory mounts. About half is TIG welded, the other half mig'd.

Close up of one of the rear seat brackets.

Seat completely mounted. Time to see how it feels.

Mounts in place to hold the pedals and the steering wheel. Dash area taking shape.

Extra support welded on for the dash area. SUPER strong. Looks heavier than it is, it's thin wall tubing.

Made the dash section with a stylish curve in it to accentuate the steering unit.

Top view of the dash area. The dash will have an insert, and be covered with vinyl. Be a great spot to put remote controls for the TV or the receiver. Heal rest and foot area starting to take shape.

Diamond plate fitted to the floor.

Entrance and exit handle added to the left side of the dash. Shifter area, on the right hand side about done.

I've got some VERY fun ideas planned for the E-brake and the cup holders. Stay tuned.

Looks like it's coming out pretty good. No way my wife would allow that in our house though.

Bump for an enthusiast putting his skills to work in an uncommon way. I'm sure some fellow h-ter's would buy that unit if it was light and inexpensive enough. When is the production run scheduled for? lol

I think we're already into the fab about 30 hours, my guess is by the time it's done, and powder coated $500 in parts, not including the electronics. I'm thinking fab time is going to run about 60-80 hours. Little piddly stuff adds up fast.

Lotta head scratching and "what if" during this build. Lot more standing around than actual work. Although version 2.0 would be more sleek, I can already see it... ...lol...

Default THUNDER

Electronics update:

I like feedback from a game, and I like it loud when I play. I want to feel like I'm there. My wife hates "to much bass" late at night. Here's the solution. Massive tranducers, or bass shakers.

Biggest ones I could find. I'm told one is probably "excessive"... We're putting in 2 of them. 2100watts at 2 ohms for the pair. The amp will drive the pair. We're hoping they'll will shake paint off the walls.

To be mounted under the seat. We're toying with the idea of mounting one flat on the chassis, and one vertically positioned to fire "side to side".

Here's the main kit.

and the items.

Son says Forza is X-box and the wheel is junk... ...lol... No idea what all that means... I just want to race.

Default Shifter

Got the bar located and shifter located. It can be moved side to side 1" for fine tuning.
