Default fuel guage problems 5th gen si

hey recently my fuel guage quit working it just kinda floats up to above full then back down sometimes gets stuck above full im just wondering how do these actually read the level of gas is there a sensor that could maybe be bad or is this fixable? its a 95 civic si thanks in advance

I had the exact same problem except mine was a faulty cluster. It can be either. Though sending units often go bad more frequently than the fuel gauge on the gauge cluster, so check the sending unit first.

1) Check sending unit
2) Check cluster

ya maybe it is in the cluster not sure ifthis has any thing to do with it but sometimes the light behind where the fuel guage is that lights up at night when the lights are o doesnt come on and other times its onits just a spot in my guages that wont light up maybe i have somethiing goin on with wiring or something

The tests shown in the diagram should help you pinpoint the problem.
