This may be an odd question.
I'm pretty sure all twin cam vtec hondas require premium fuel due to the higher compression (compared to a B18B or A)
My question, since the B17 is an odd ball...seeing how the compression is in the mid 9's, would you be ablw to get away with middle grade gas? not that I would do it, but just curious if any B17 owners have had any problems using mid grade...knocking, slugginsh starts etc.

Its hard to say because cam timing dictates how much compression the engine actually uses which is the Static vs Dynamic compression ratio. My rule of thumb is anything over 10:1 and I would use 89 or 91 at a minimum. If it under then I would'nt be worried about 87 that much. To be on the safe side though I'd stay within the factory guidelines of the recommended fuel grade if they differ from this.

I've owned my b17 for about fiv years now. I get better gas milage on the BP midgrade than anything else. IT IS IMPORTANT TO BY A QUALITY GAS. Bp is the only thing that I will run if I can help it.

Ouch....that'll hurt him.

im running midgrade right now on my 92 gsr, it runs fine, but i usually fill up at places like bp, shell, and mobil
then again it is my beater
then again it is my beater

Eeeek I'd never put 87 in any Honda motor that has a 10 or more compression ratio.

Yeah, I think it might run OK with midgrade. A 92 GSR beater...brings a tear to my eye
<---apparently a lot of tears!

My 99 GSR knocked on 87 but ran fine on 89. I did it as an experiment...the car was also my beater. You're saving $1-$2 per fill up from downgrading. But the car uses more gas because it has to retard timing....so...you lose $2-$4 there; maybe more.
Why does a 16 year old integra beater bring tears to your eyes? sentimental attatchment? I guess it's kind of a rare car....but...

so did i, man did my friend looked at my stupid. i had an ls n this is my first gsr so i learned already. my car ran like crap while i was racin this gsr hatch.

well the body of my gsr has cancer everywhere, thus the reason why i picked up a DA

Yeah, being from Chicago, I'm sure you must have plenty of rust. I've always wanted a DA GSR. I'd take it over a DC GSR any day of the week. One of these days

I wound,nt have even gambled with it just to see if or how the car would run on 87. It probably retartded its ignition values as much as it could to adapt to the lower octane level, however IMO it probably ran like sh*t because it was pinging.

I drove mostly highway. It ran fine once it wasn't suddenly accelrating. The only reason it knocked is because I'd jump on the gas from 30mph in like 4th or 5th to see if it would knock. Like I said...it was experimental. The manual says you can use 87 in a case wehre 93 isnt available.

Wow!! Which manual? The OEM/Helms repair manual, or the smaller glove compartment manual/handbook that comes with the car?

I had a JDM b16 OBD0 in my DA and I ran 87 on it for years. Never had an issue and still got good mileage. When i started modding it i switched to 93.

Wow, I did not know that. I guess its good to know incase you endup in BFE and the only fuel grade present is 87 then you can still use it. However IMO the chances of that happening are probably slim to none.

Interesting to know. I would have expected problems with the new generation of GSR motors running 87 more so than the first gen GSR due to the compression differences between the two.

Im thinking the engine just retards the timing to prevent the motor from knocking.
I bet the JDM motors without the knock would ping a bit on 87
