it's likely that Mobil has an ad showing their oils' superiority to SYNPower.

I was using Shell Rotella T 5W-40 Diesel oil, but they've now followed others in reducing the protective Zinc. Before, I liked Valvoline Syn. Mobile One Extended Performance was good, too, as was Pennzoil Platinum. Torco is great.

If you notice the results compaird valv syn to mobile 1 non-syn.
can you trust it? I know I would rather run syn over reg any day.
But It is strange I use mobile 1 for along time now but I keep seeing these independent studies pop up all over the place that bash regular mobil 1. a friend said this school did a test and had penzoil come out on top for regular motor oil. wierd eh. The results vary any were so I say for an engine it could almost be pure preference/ price among the top companies.

I have to agree... comparing a full syn vs a dino oil is just silly. Hooray for marketing hype.

Then again, many "synthetic" oils on the market are not synthetic at all, and are simply highly processed dino oils.
I say, any oil that could be put into the engine is a valid comparison to any other oil that could be used in the engine, synth or not. I'll go back to buying dino oil the instant it protects better, the process behind producing it is irrelevant to my needs.

Not true.
Mobil makes conventional oil as well as synthetic oil. However, they only put the Mobil 1 name on their synthetic oil. (As you can see here.) So the Valvoline ad is a comparison of two 100 percent synthetic motor oils. Minor quibbles over the definition of that term aside; they are not comparing with a conventional oil or with a synthetic blend.
I don't know whether the claims in the ad itself are true, though.

so, since i've been using dino oil for a long long time, technically by that metal loss graph, i don't have any metal in the motor anymore?

I saw this the other day that Valvoline makes a conventional racing oil that is "not street legal" with "increased amounts of zinc for extra engine protection".
I am told that zinc is a good thing if you have an aftermarket cam and/or springs.

Being a diesel oil... all the good additives they keep lowering and pulling from normal oils are left in.

Diesel Oils are great! Just do not run a cat with them! Call Amsoil and talk to them. They will inform you how good the Diesel oil is in motors that do run cats.

Interesting. I have also been told by people that I trust and believe know their stuff that Zinc is a very good thing to have for reducing wear. I did not know Valvoline made this racing conventional oil or the racing synthetic oil. I am familiar with their VR1 oil, which is what I use when breaking in engines and do not want to use a synthetic.

Diesel oil may still be better than many gas oils, but as I noted earlier, Shell has, in fact, significantly reduced the amount of Zinc in Rotella T, which was for me the best bang-for-the-buck. When I heard this I bought the last of the old stuff that I could find.
