Default Trouble with aftermarket tach in '89 Civic.

Has anyone else encountered problems when trying to install an Autogage 5" monster tach with shiftlight on a '88-'91 Civic? I've tried this twice now with 2 different tachs and both tims the back light comes on and when the power is turned on you can adjust the dial to set your shift light but then when the car is started the tach doesn't work. Note that this is for a car that is NOT street driven, only driven on track in road race competition. I've spliced into the stock tach signal wire on the back of the stock gauge cluster, is this part of the problem? I know this is the correct wire because I've tracked it down via the FSM.

Do I need to run a wire out to the dizzy and tap into the tach signal wire there?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Sam

yeah, that is what I figured I'd have to do, just wanted to avoid running the extra wire in the engine bay. that and if the dizzy ever goes bad, which happens more often then you'd think when roadracing these cars, then I'll have to always tap into the new dizzy in order for the tach to work.

anyone know what the problem is in these cars with the tach sinal at the back of the stock gauge cluster? is the signal not a true 12 volt signal and therefore the Autogage tach doesn't recognize the signal properly? i've done this install on three different CRX's and never had a problem so I believe that it is Civic specific.

thanks again,

Sam

feel free to PM me with any questions you have as I've been there, done that on pretty much all of the general Improved Touring and Honda Challenge stuff with these cars and do have a side business where I'm taking care of trackside support for customer cars and renting out my Civic as well.

thanks again for the info, time to go tap into the dizzy.

Regards,

Sam
