Whinning Noise after Timing belt/Water pump install
96 Accord EX 2.2l
ok so i guess i just need a little clarification on how tight the tension should be on the timing belt. Also the tension on the balance shaft belt.
I just replaced my timing belt and water pump, per the FAQ posted by Touring accord and per haynes manual.
well the motor is making a whinning noise almost as if i have a super-charger under the hood.
i have a sneaking suspicion that i may have tensioned either the balance shaft belt or the water pump just a hair too tight. Maybe someone can help me out.
TIA

wow.....ok....
i skipped a big step. according to the FAQ, step 30,
it must be the balance shaft thats whinning. But can someone explain how i might get it back into the proper position now that it's more than likely out of balance or not in its original place??

unfortunately the only way is to probably get the crank pulley back off so you can remove the lower cover and double check your alignment of everything. Although, you may be able to set the engine to TDC, remove the valve cover and side cover to look down into the lower cover and see if you can see the alignment marks for the front shaft if they aren't aligned then you'll need to take it back apart. If it is then go to the back of the block and remove the maintenance bolt and stick a bolt or screw driver in there and see if the shaft is in the right place, again if it's not then you will have to take it back apart. I'm told there is an alignment mark on the outside of the rear shaft but I didn't know that at the time of my write-up and I don't think it will be in an area you can see with the lower cover on anyway.
If it is in fact out of alignment you will need to lock the timing belt tensioner in place while you remove, reposition and tension the balance shaft belt.
But it is my understanding that an out of balance engine form the balance shafts would create more of a vibration instead of a whine. Typically a whine is from the belts being too tight. But if you skipped making sure the balance shafts were aligned properly then it's a good idea to double check it.

touring you're right.
The balance shaft is in the right position. I actually didnt take the the timing belt tensioner bolt back out from the block after i tensioned everything. Its still in there. Im about to go double check my work. Cause when i test drove it last night, it felt like everything was right on target. Except for that whine.
Thank you sir.

anyone be able to tell me how much deflection i should be looking at on the timing belt, towards the front of the motor?
Im assuming its gonna be tight in the back but a little bit looser in the front?

If I can remember I will check mine when I get home after work. My engine is sitting on the engine stand so I can pop the valve cover and side cover off real fast and look.
if you fail once: try again
if you fail twice: try again
if you fail thrice: seek professional help for the trauma of knowing your a horrible tech.
don't sweat it!! i got everything right the third time around!! thanks for your help!!!
