always wondered about a sound made after your car is shut off

Default always wondered about a sound made after your car is shut off

Was wondering if its normal to hear a loud ticking sound or pinging sound, sounds like something popping, is this normal, or am i just trippin, i hear it at nite when i come home late! anybody have this? does anybody know what it is, its from the engine bay i think, never really paid close attention to this

thats the sound of metal contracting. Like on a cold night...after a drive...the engine is pretty hot..and then shut off right away usually makes these noises. sounds like tapping/pooping noises.

I agree with AE86owner.
After a hard drive, Try and take it easy a mile or so from home. This will let it cool down easier. Who knows, your car might even last longer.

Still nothing to worry about.

do you guys get a ocassional "pop" noise from under the valve cover??

i usually get those tick tick tick tick in the engine and those ocassional tick or pop form the exhaust and now i hear the valve cover pop..

different metals have different rates of "expansion due to heat." Unlike metals sandwiched together cooling and contracting at differnt rates causes movements between them and popping and pinging may result.

that sound is usually cheap hardware used for the exhaust flanges, if you use high quality bolts... stainless, grade8 ect. it will more than likely go away.

the cheap bolts ping when they are contracting.
