"SFWD" class move to Hot Rod for 09? Suggesstions???
Been sitting here and pondering what to do for next year since this year is pretty much shot and done with.
Alot of the so called "SFWD" Setups are getting a bit more extreme, more money and technology involved in it, and I see it as not anymore can the normal daily joe schmoe can just go into anymore. I mean in the beginning that class was built for alot of the low budget "street" guys to have a class to race, get points, championship to race in. But now I see the class has far exceeded itself for any normal everyday guy to compete in.
So kinda figured since the "HOTROD" class is kinda dead, why not roll the exisiting "HOT ROD" guys into the ProFWD class which entail may fill up that class, and the "HOTROD" class will be the extreme "SFWD" setups. I think there's enough of those guys to fill that class up. The "SFWD" class should go to drag radials which is truely IMO a "street class"
Im putting my flame suit on just incase since I have a feeling I may get flamed for this. But thinking now early enough, that we may have some changes good for next season

what does this do to the average "hot rod" racer? give them no chance to compete, full tube vs unibody. i dont think this will fly. and really scare away anyone attempting to build a semi competative hot rod car.
as for the street class. i do think you could find other ways to keep the street class where it is. remember there is no more SFWD/TS so lets focus more on battle being the national series, instaed of making more classes for the already "lack" of competators

i dont race this class, but i would think that hot rod as we once knew it is dead..i like the idea because hot rod can use the help. but what about the hot rod cars that are not as fast as the HR front runners, but are faster than the SPFWD guys? how would u compensate for that?
fast PFWd >fastest HR
slower HR > fastest SPFWD
how will that work?
fast PFWd >fastest HR
slower HR > fastest SPFWD
how will that work?
so basically your saying sfwd should be accepted in comp eliminator since that is where the hot rod cars fit into now since nopi is gone.
comp elim is a pretty hardcore class of racers, no matter what division. it all depends what index nhra gives us...but like davef said, support boti

eh.... i dont like the idea of any of us sport compact guys going and running comp elim...
stay here and support the racing body, that gives us a place to race, no matter how "small" everyone thinks this sport is. without us racers the sport is only going to get smaller.
i would like to see the top sfwd cars venture into hotrod cars, but this would mean spending ~20grand(or a whole lot more) to get them to that point, that type of commitment, requires alot of time/money/ TEAM WORK/ and a whole lot more.
i dont think we should try to create more class's (such as a sfwd/non dogbox/t3 based turbine/24.5 tire/air-air intercooler) with our sport spread as thin as it is already
i do enjoy seeing all of the street cars getting faster/ more sophisticated every year, but at the same time, these were supposed to be "street based" class's to give people "somewhat of a stepping stone" to the "pro" catagories. now, with that being said, some of the current run sfwd type cars are already "in the same league" as far as parts/technology that go into the cars.
i think it would be a great thing to see some of these guys go "PRO" . but we all dont know their situations. maybe they are stringing themselves short running a sfwd car at the level they are, and stepping to "PRO" would only sell themselves shorter, so in that case, its just not feasible to go "PRO" without the backing and team help that they would need to run a succesful season.
sorry if, i sound as though, im chasing my tail

remember there is no more SFWD/TS so lets focus more on a redesign for the class in one national series </TD></TR></TABLE>
There is Battle, and there is a class, what makes you guys think they're going to redesign anything? Battle rules are almost exactly what SFWD was, why would they change it? I'll be real surprised if they allow water to air intercoolers, i think the guys that switched their setups for NOPI rules are going to be screwed.
And like stated, how fair is it to make Hot Rod run with PFWD, about as fair as making us run with Hot Rod. That's not gonna happen.

Its like telling someone they have to pick up a second before next weekend. People are going broke trying to "step it up". There have to be limits somewhere. The current rules are pretty good but need to be tweaked a bit to level the field.

I wasnt stating the fact to make us SFWD cars run with Hotrod cars, just the fact to make that the class for the serious hardcore SFWD become the new hotrod class.Hotrod cars get bumped into PFWD. I mean honestly how many truely "hotrod" cars are there? and PFWD? I was implying that Joe Simpson has to run against DaveF.
I just think the SFWD class has gotten a little bit out of hand for the everyday guy to go and compete that's all. This is a sportsman class, sportsman IMO are the low budget everyday guy that wants to take there everyday car and go and play around with it. Those guys now to even compete will have to get a 4000.00 gearbox minimum. I guess its what they say you have pay to play.
Before we know it, people will have to have at least 10K into there shortblock and tranny just to even remotely make it into the 16 car field

Don't lke it at all, hotrod class is full out here. I don't see where you'd call it dead. Just some new faces coming up.

Im using this for consideration for people that are potentially going to travel across the country to almost 90% of the events. I do realize that there are local guys that have certain vehicle that will race, but for demographic reasons and to see the sport grow more and actually looked like for potential sponsors that it would be worth to invest there time and money in us.
Did anyone see pictures of the turnout that was at the event in Atco? The event was hella packed with tons of people and I think that's what we need to have. More racers = more attendance.
I know everyone wants to go faster....Im pretty sure the guys in PFWD dont want to be slowed down to compensate for the HotRod guys. That's why we should try to work on this and see if we can all figure something out.

with all the above reasons its a bad idea plain and simple. lets just keep what we have and let it grow. changing or adding classes only screws the racers who have to change things to fit into that particular class. unibody race cars in tube frame classes and street cars in unibody race classes i think would confuse the fans also.
for these turbo fwd it should remain in a progressive state.
power street> sfwd/SC/TS(whatever) > HR > PFWD
choose the class that fits you best then "step up" at your pace.

car owners will always evolve with more technology. or else we all be racing drag turbo kits with fmu's and check vavles.

I honestly like Modified class. Its exciting tons of side by side racing and it shows from Atco this weekend. I think Jason Hunt put a good showing for the FWD guys there.

Why is everyone trying to change sh..t on here leave it alone.Life is all about progression.Progress or stay at home.
I didnt try to post this to step on anyone's toes or **** anyone off. Its just a suggestion just like all the other suggestions made. I just think that it will make the class a bit tighter and increase more racers out there to come out if they know they've got a shot in the game. I still recall this being called a sportsman class correct?
For those that can remember, back a few seasons ago, what was the class to watch? Pro RWD...it was exciting, cause everything was close race...Last few years its been Modified class and it shows that it still is popular. I dont think anyone wants to compete or watch a class where the field is either 9.1 or 10.5.
I just forsee this happening soon with how some of these cars are being built. The SFWD hype was huge within the last 3yrs, tons of people buying parts to build the SFWD street car. Drive it during the week, take it to the track and run it and win a trophy or some money. Now with all these new setups like dogboxes, strain gauges, extreme datalogging not your everyday person can do that.
Maybe restrictions may help....but then some will complain about restrictions that we have seen in the past. I guess you cant win them all now can you?

IF you can't be competive in SFWD maybe you need to consider stepping down a class rather then getting the rest of the field to step up.
if its "tamed down" according to everybody it would be a 67mm class.....im sure the class would still be a 9.5 class. not only that everybody knows somebody that has a 67mm turbo on their car that still runs 11's. then what? make it a 57trim class?
a few years back when guys were running at the top of the class running 9.6-9.7----sure they didnt have dog box trannies in their cars........but do you guys know the maintenance programs they were on? it would have been cheaper to buy a dog box gear set.
i think there could be a class combination for entry level stuff but leave the rules braud enough to have an outlaw style class. 61mm gets slicks, 67mm gets radials or something.
look at power street. that was an entry level class.... there are atleast 3 9 second cars running in that class, they just havnt put a full run together yet. it seems most of the cars are in the 11's and then you would have the 9 second guys up front. thats a bigger gap than spfwd and power street is the entry level class.
keep in mind a lot of these "mini hot rod cars" are almost built more as learning platforms than anything else. im sure everybody on this board has received some sort of free information from each one of the guys that are being referred to. i know i have.
the reality of it is you could put a lot of this fancy stuff into a lot of these cars and they may not go any faster if the user doesnt know how to operate it all. (lord knows im still learning) if you limit turbo size your going to slow down everybody....but the people that are going slower than the front guys, are still going to be the equal amount slower.
and even if there is a more entry level class......your still going to have guys right on the edge of the rules that are going to be a substantial amount faster than everybody else. the way i see it....the guys that are going fast have all been in the game for a good amount of time. that seems to be the common factor more than the parts that are on the car. there are plenty of cars out there that are not running anywhere CLOSE to their potential. so if you change the rules, those guys are going to be even FURTHER away from the competition.
i still dont think my car has ran anywhere close to as fast as it should. the integra or the civic

in all due respect the sfwd class is far from what it was setup originally to be ..they should make a class for the average joe to compete in(kind of what the sfwd class was originally gonna be) when i see people towing with $40,000 trucks $10,000 trailers and $60,000 cars on them $6000 trannies and $5000 managment setups im gonna have to say its not a average joe setup.
if they ever do make a average joe class (wich they prob wont ) i say def eliminate any stickers on the car as far as im concerned stickers=sponsors wether it be tax rite offs for their shop (wich i do know of at least 1 car in sfwd doing that) or just a bunch of deals on parts.and definaletly iron out the rules from the get go ,,loop holes in them is what kills the class ...those are my 2 pennies ...and if not f--- it i love the sfwd class anyway
