Replacing head gasket, dowel pin question..
I recently sold my GSR head, and picked up a built ITR head..i'm about to put the new head on but i just seen that i sold the dowel pins with the GSR head but luckly i had an extra set! question is: do i put the dowel pins into the head first? or should i insert them into the block then then drop the HG over them followed by the head??
also all i need is two dowel pins correct? and they go on the exhust side??
thanks alot
BTW: this is a GSR block

2 dowel pins yes.
I like to install them into the block, this keeps the gasket from moving around.
I also like to put the head bolts into the head in the same hole as the dowel pins and line the head bolts into the dowel pins while the head is above the block- keeps from moving the head around looking for the dowel pins. Saves time and lines right up

Cool, thats what i was thinking...but do the dowel pins go on the exhaust side, or intake side??

for as many times as I've done head gaskets, I really don't remember
I believe exhaust side. They'll only be able to go in one spot

For B-vtec, yes exhaust side and there are only 2. Best to put into the block to hold the gasket.
Protip: If the block or head has been decked significantly make sure the overall height of the dowel is shorter than the combined "head counterbore + block counterbore + head gasket thickness". If the dowel height is greater it will keep the head from seating.
