Default $1500 sound right for new OEM cat and o2 sensor with tax and labor?

I was hoping to get off easy with just a 400 dollar cat install.

I was told if I get an aftermarket cat, chances are likely "the check engine light will come back on in a short period of time".

is this true?

I don't mind dropping this cash into it - even though with what I paid + this it puts it right at its blue book value - as long as they are being honest about the OEM being the way to go.

I have read that sometimes these codes do some back with aftermarket cats.

Advise or comments? I ok'd the work but they had to order the Cat from Honda so it wont be there until at least tomorrow - it comes with 12/12 warranty.

That's some crack head pricing right there.

I'm currently running a Magnaflow hi-flow that was PREVIOUSLY throwing a code 67, bad cat. Swapped out the motor that was burning oil and, after 40 miles, cat seems to be fuctioning fine again.

Had a Carsound hi-flow on my EG, put probably 40,000 miles on it, am close with the person that owns it now and it still works like a charm.

Grab a hi-flow and some flanges and take them to a welder you trust.

yeah, it is a lot. but i want this car to last at least a few years.

This is including the O2 sensor.. I even got a free oil change thrown

why would they push the OEM anyways, its not like there is that much profit form them simply getting OEM instead of aftermarket.

they might get a dealer type discount on the cat from honda, and charge you the full retail value, lots of money, and how much of that cost is labor time, labor is usually around $70-80 an hour... and if its OEM it will be bolted on in 10 minutes...

The free oil change? big whoop, $30 to do it almost anywhere else...

I think you're getting raped... Have you tried getting a 2nd quote?

OEM cat is p/n5 for a 92-95 Civic

I think you should be able to go back and input your car and get pricing.

OK I couldn't wait. http://www.hondaautomotivepart...+PIPE

$652.00

I'll get some better info tomorrow before they start anything. I had dropped it off and really just want it done.

the extra $$$ doesnt bother me if there is even a slight chance aftermarket could throw this error some time again in the future.

I just want this done right. It is a performance auto shop that came highly recommended as a reputable shop - but I feel violated.

Eh, well see. thanks for the words.

and the oil change was a joke.. trying to laugh this pain off!

@ 1992Si:

List Ours
931.97 652.38 Converter
267.61 187.33 O2

so $900 parts - $600 labor does seem excessive.

Buying OEM cats is the dumbest thing ever.

Buy a generic cat for 100 bucks or less - and yes, you can get them CARB approved.

You can also use a generic O2 sensor (like denso) which will work 100% fine.

No, there is not even a slight chance that using aftermarket will mess anything up.

Get a generic cat that's CARB legal if it bothers you that much or u live in CA, you can get a regular O2 sensor for 60 bucks that will work 100%, and it shouldn't be more than 120 bucks in labor (~2 hours TOPS) to put it in. It really takes less than that but any more in labor is just stupid.

PS:
Yeah, when I was young and stupid I once called Honda too asking how much for a catalytic converter from them - and I almost died when I heard their price. Luckily I've grown a bit smarter since then.

Replacing a catalytic converter doesn't teach you much.

On the other hand you learn plenty when you start snapping bolts because you don't have an impact wrench.

It all depends on the job, the knowledge, and the tools.

I have no tools, no way to get the car in the air, and no previous knowledge of this type of work.

So despite my P0420 code - and bad o2 - and Ifor arguments sake, get a MagnaFlow High-Flow Catalytic Converter got $150.00 and a good o2 sensor - my code will never return?

why is the mechanic telling me the code will come back if I get aftermarket? is there any reason other than to jack me?

i just bought a direct fit cat from advanced auto for roughly 130 today and spent $60 for an old school world spot mid section, $47 dynomax muffler (on sale maybe), $30 bucks for the flange to make the axle back, the gaskets, and 5' of 2 1/4 pipe. and spent $100 to have it all installed and get the axle back made. so my entire exhaust was about $370 with a new cat.

When i bought headers for my old car i changed the O2 sensor because honestly i was having a bitch of a time getting it out. and i figured if it was that rusted and cruddy i might was well put something fresh on. I believe that the O2 sensor cost $60 at Napa and it was pretty simple to install it :-)

i'd say thats some bad pricing.

dont goto honda for the cat btw. they will try to bend you over harder then the person that priced you out for that job. And honestly a cats a cat... OEM vs. Aftermarket OE is about the same. The highflow cat would be nicer too tho if you have a nice engine or some nice engine work to compliment it.

WOW, honestly you are getting raped... No person in their right mind should charge you that much. All cats do the same thing. Even purchasing OEM, it should not be close to that. If you lived close to me I would honestly do that for you for the price of dinner one evening if you supplied the parts. And if you do by chance live close to me, pm me what reputable shop it is that is doing this?!? I find it crazy that people would pay that much for someting so simple!!

so if they are really trying to charge you 600 in labor... that would be like them saying its gonna take 8 hours (shops generally charge 75ish an hour out here)

thats a whole day to unscrew an unplug a O2 sensor and put the new one in.
and pop off the 5 bolts that connect your header to the cat, and the cat to the midpipe...

SUPER EASY...find a muffler shop. something small family or mexican owned. they always do great work for good prices.

Never goto the stealership, find a muffler shop and get an aftermarket one

should be less than 200 and the o2 is easy to do just pick one up it should be

less than 200 also. You'll save alot of money.
