Default Trying to price parts for a 300hp B18C1 build. I'm really not sure where to start.

As the title states, I'm looking to try and get 300hp with a turbocharger on a 97 GSR. The engine is bone stock and I'm probably going to have to get it rebuilt (it's leaking/burning oil).

I'm trying to figure out how much it would cost me to get around 300hp. I'm going to have someone rebuild the engine for me since I really don't have the tools or space currently to tear down an engine however I really wouldn't mind putting the turbo on myself.

I know the first step is to determine what turbo and then begin piecing the kit together from there but since I'm going to get the engine rebuilt, is there anything I should do to it? I'd like to have a decently reliable engine as I'll be daily driving it for the next year or so.

Thanks for the help.

just search and look at wuts common use the K.I.S.S. principle. dont go ***** to the wall overly complicated.

make sure you have a good EMS, and supporting mods.

take the block to a machine shop have it honed out,get some arias,cp,or weisco pistons mated with eagle rods and oem or acl bearings and you should be then able to handle 300whp easily...are you trying to peice a turbo kit together or buy a turbo kit package with evrything you need?

whichever is cheaper and better (i assume it's better to piece together a kit than to buy one premade)

its cheaper to peice it together yourself, but on the other hand there are some pretty nice kits available from Peakboost and AFI that dont really break the bank...all you need other than the turbo kit is bigger injectors,255 walbro fuel pump and a good EMS & tune.

My biggest concern (probably like everyone else) is cost. I'm not jumping into this project with 1000 bucks and a whole lot of hope but I definitely want to try and get something that with all the parts and labor is around 5000-6000

So for the engine (when I get it rebuilt) I'm going to get better pistons and rods. Anything else? At what point do you need to get the block sleeved?

there's really no telling when you need it sleeved...some people put down 400-500hp with stock sleeves and they run for awhile and others put down 300-350 and crack a sleeve easily...its really all in the tune...i would say anything over 450-475whp needs to be sleeved for reliabilty purposes...it would suck to spend a bunch of money on a new turbo kit then fry the motor or crack a sleeve cuz your tune wasnt that great...if you have the extra 900-1100 dollars i would sleeve it just for peice of mind.

Well tuning is the one thing that I don't plan on skimping on.

i was just looking at a bunch of stuff on that site

that's awesome that they tell you what parts you need for various horsepower levels

it says there that for 300-400hp you don't need to sleeve the block or upgrade the pistons or rods

based on your experiences, is it a bad idea to run stock rods and pistons with 300-400hp?

its really not a bad idea but you have no room for error and have to make sure your tuner is VERY VERY good at what he does

It's time to read the faq's and do some searches. It will take time but you will learn most of what you need to know.........

Oh yea, and the post given earlier looks to be pretty good if you want to buy a package deal.

you dont need to sleeve the block. 600 can be made on stock sleeves, albeit it is on borrowed time. but it can be done.

stock internals is fine for 300whp. upgrade rods and pistons and go from there if you are leary.

if you dont want to go that far, get a good kit, or piece one, and spend the money on the ems/fuel system.

I know you only want 300ish hp but once you have that you'll want a little more then a little more..........So since you are going to rebuild it anyways I suggest you at least get some forged internals and a good EMS and fuel set up. For the turbo kit, you can piece together for cheap by looking in the h-t classifieds.

Is there anything really special that I need to do with the head in addition to just rebuilding it? How about cam gears?

cam gears are a plus but at 300hp you wont really need them unless you get a big cam

I pieced together a kit awhile back that had everything you needed from turbo to injector clips. If you want PM me your email and I'll email it over to you. I think it was around 3200 and for sure able to hit 300hp-400hp.

I spent about 5-6k on my kit but i went with AEM EMS with built in Uego and serial data gauge which was a rather large chunk of it...

you can always save money with good planning though, for example i just sold a turbo kit to my friend, it had a turbonetics ball bearing 57trim, meutek manifold, tial 38 with neck and dump and a 3" dp all ceramic coated for $500 sure the turbo was blown but $300 at blaast performance fixed that so now he spent $800, he bought a tial bov an ebay intercooler and piping so now he is up to $1200, a few months later he bought injectors/hondataS200/fuel pump so hes now at $1700 add $500 for misc parts/gaskets/oillines and tuning and your at $2200, he had a 3" exhaust built for $400, added some slim fans for $150 and you can see for under 3k he was done, its not the best way to build a kit but its certainly not the worse way. and he got the most important parts down which is a good tune, a decent turbo, a wg that wont leak/creep, and a mani that wont crack.

Yeah, that'd be good so I can at least have it for reference. Is it a shop or just a person?

If it's a shop then I might inquire about engine rebuilds.
