Default welding SS to MS

I'm trying to weld a mild steel rod(for the muffler hanger) I picked up at Home Depot to a stainless steel muffler. I'm using a Lincoln gasless mig welder I borrowed and it did not work. Do I need a SS rod? Or SS wire for the welder?

I had no problem welding mild steel to stainless with my flux-core welder. I used stainless steel flux core wire.

Are you sure the rod is steel?

You should have no problems welding that rod to the muffler, unless you don't have enough power (which is likely).
