Default cam install gone bad....HELP

i had itr cams in my gsr, and i took them out. at first the timing belt was slipping, but i fixed that. now when you turn it....every time the "up" on the cam gears are facing up down left or right....when a new cylinder was at tdc.....the timing belt would get kinda loose and turning the crank would be really hard then just have alot of slack and just turn. so when i started the car the idle was really screwed like a hoping kinda idle. and i pushed the gas and the car would hesitate for a sec then rev up and then die. do you guys think that just cuz the timing belt is loose and causing it to hesitate and die?

I just finished rebuilding my engine and I had the same problem at first. I found out it was just the fact that the belt was a little off when I put it on. you need to make sure the belt is tight with the gears and the crank or else when you put it on the timming will be off, the tensioner only works on the right side of the route. so make sure it is tight on the left and the use the tensioner to tighten the right side.

You should only turn the crank in the CCW direction (the regular direction of rotation), never CW, otherwise you'll slacken the timing belt.

Realize that the Valves in the head are not Fully extended when the pistons are at TDC ... they are fully extended before top dead center

man when i put in my crower cams ... i didnt have the gears set right .. no degree wheel.. car ran kinda shitty till i had the gears tuned on a dyno ..

if you didnt degree wheel your cams in and set them right to spec.... the gears need to be tuned

Make sure that you are right on timing, even if you are a tooth off, the car will run like crap! Also make sure that you are using the right belt, some times newer and older models the teeht count on the belt might be one more or one less(If its one less it will be tight, even with the tensioner loose or once you tighten the tensioner it will also make it jump timing or so) if its one more tooth one the belt it will make it jump timing. Also make sure that the distributor is at factory specs, it might help little!! The same problem happened to a friend of mine, the part store gave him the wrong belt or he probaly asked for the wrong one.

i got it to run and idle. but the idle isn't as smooth as my friends gsr. it sounds kinda funny. not really smooth. at tdc the timing was on. but when i was adjusting my valves...i noticed when i went to a diff cylinder, the timing was off.

Make sure you set the No. 1 piston to TDC. Rotate the crankshaft 5-6 revolutions (CCW) to set the belt. Set the No. 1 piston back to TDC. Loosen the adjusting bolt (below the driver's side motor mount beneath the rubber tab) 1/2 turn (180 degrees) only. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise 3 teeth on the camshaft pulley. Tighten the adjusting bolt (40lbf-ft). Retorque the crankshaft pulley (130 lbf-ft).

I got this directly from the Helms. Good luck!
