Default Which will yield better mpg in a crx d15z1 from a vx or d16y5 from a hx, what is hx gear ratio

lol, super long topic name I know, i have a crx and want to get awesome gas mileage in it, want to convert it to obd1 or obd2 and use a vtec-e engine, should I use the vx or the hx motor? Also, I found the vx gear ratios but what ratios do the civic hx's use?

i think you could also get them in manual, anybody know if you can swap a d16y5 head onto a d16a6 block?

they also do come in manuals or at least the 96 i had did. yep you can but you will be bumping the compression

you could just fill it up and walk everywhere else or have it parked and start it once every 3 weeks then you'll be kicking everyones *** especailly the hx and vx owners

awesome topic, hx motors are awesome, i'm rebuilding mine and imma install it back in my ride and sell the b20/vtec and put my d16y5 back in my ek. i have a coupe 1996 hx, and this car is cool since they all stick shift and they save mad gas, i used to fill up the tank with 32 dollars by the time gas was 3.50 and it was every three weeks and i used to drive mad long but i wanted to rebuilt the motor since i been running it for 215,000 miles

i've got a 98 ex, and after trying this swap in a ef, I was thinking of putting the hx motor into my ex as well. But i heard from bense that the VX motor would yield better mpg over the d16y5, but I can't find any vx motors around.

flea bay, if you can find a d15 block (should be easy), vx rods, pistons, and head. you could just build one.

so do you guys think the vx would get better mileage? also, anything special to get vtec to work when swapping a vx or hx head onto a d15 or d16 like you have to with lsvtecs?

VX vs HX
1.5L vs 1.6L
OBD1 vs OBD2 (wiring OBD2 into a CRX will be loads of fun - key word, load)
49-state spec VX ECU/O2 combo = full lean burn mode vs HX's toned down lean burn mode.

all above mentions means D15Z1 wins in my book.

HX's are mostly manual trans, some are CVTs.

the VX's VTEC solenoid is not special, the way it works in the head and the way the ECU uses it is special.

gear ratios:
VX/CX:
1- 3.250
2- 1.761
3- 1.066
4- 0.853
5- 0.702
R- 3.153
FD- 3.250

HX:
1- 3.250
2- 1.782
3- 1.172
4- 0.909
5- 0.702
R- 3.153
FD- 3.722

lean burn = more emissions production
later years were more hit by stricter emissions regulations so less time where lean burn mode is active.

I've never been able to compare the 92-93(P07-A00) and the 94-95(P07-A01) to see if it was reduced on the later VX's as well.

well then vx sounds good to me, the hx I was gunna buy fell through anyways.

Anybody run a hx motor off of a vx ecu, giving better mpg and more power cuz of the bigger ports and more displacement?

VX = 1.5L
HX = 1.6L

1.6L on 1.5L ECU = leaner than it should be at all times (in a bad way), plus the ignition timing will be out of whack. Which is a really bad thing.

is not a good idea putting a 1.6L head over a 1.5L block u will literaly lose compression, but sound cool as hell to do a obd2 swap on a crx since they obd0 but i never have owned a vx, and i dun know how they are, but i do know a vx model civic is the light model than any eg model and they have a 1.5l vtec motor, but idk how they do on gas, if they are eficient as a hx i would def. recommend it, since i'm really happy with the hx motor i have in the garage getting rebuilt. but theres a small problem. this car have a sucky 2nd gear first picks up real good, second kills it, lol becareful in really really bad uphills on the second gear.

well I found a vx motor for $300 and ecu for $75, wiring isn't a problem for me.

I heard from bense and other guys that the vx was more lean burn than the hx cuz of nox output and emissions of obd2, SO, it'll be simpler, though less hp by about 20.

anybody swap a vx into a crx of light ef hatch yet? let me know your results and mpg, thanks guys.

i know this guy who did a d16y8 ex from a 1999 civic coupe to a crx hf and pretty much his car was faster, all he did was muffler and headers so the car can release more air and intake ofcourse. his car wouldn't force too much by that. the crx is really light so he saved pretty good gas.

well the 16y8 really isn't a fuel mileage saving motor like the vx or hx d15z1 or d16y5 is, but yeah i've heard of guys swapping y8's and z6's a lot, but never a vx or hx motor. And i'm guessing that's because up until recently most people didn't care about gas prices, but now, ***** going up up up.

u know that the hx, got a different ecu and harness than a regular obd2 civic, idk if is the same with the vx cuz when i bought the b20/vtec, my head was a b16 head and i thought i could of use the same ecu (the hx) but it didn't worked, so i got a si b16 and it didn't fir which was pretty weird so we took all the hardness from a crashed dx ek9 hatch

I average 38 mpg in my 99 HX, but I've got up to 49mpg. I've heard of guys getting over 50 in theirs. Anyway either way you go you should be good.

Make sure you use an HF trans, it will be the easiest in an 88-91 chassis (cable trans).

I'd expect a VX equipped CRX to be capable of 45-50 mpg without trying too hard. You'll probably hit your peak economy cruising at 50-55 mph on the interstate. The CRX isn't nearly as aerodynamic as the Insight is.
