Are all gsr starters the same? Car won't start.
Hello,
I have a civic with a gsr swap and today the car won't start. I was driving and suddenly I noticed that my head lights were going dim and power was being sucked up. I tried starting it again and it would turn over but after a while it just started knocking/clicking like it was the starter. Me and my friends charged the battery and tried push starting it and it worked but lasted only 30 seconds and again power was being sucked out. I stepped on the gas while the car was on but all I got out of it was this low coughing noise. Now the car won't even turn over. I thought it might be starter, but this looks like I got an alternator problem too.
What do you guys think? If you need more info I can give it to you. Just ask!!!
I ran into another problem. I bought a 95' gsr starter from autozone and now it won't fit my car. So I was wondering, are all starters the same??????? The new starter has a groove and the old one is just a circle that plugs right into the tranny. I can take a picture if you don't understand what I'm saying.
All help is appreciated.

thats what you get for going to autozone and not advance auto parts

Agreed. Sounds like you have a battery/alternator problem. If a battery is dead/dying, it won't hold a charge for very long, which is why you only got it to run for 30sec. You can try charging it overnight with a trickle charger, but I'm going to guess you need a new battery. If one of your friends has a Honda with a similar sized battery, I would swap a known good battery in and see if it starts. If it does, monitor system voltage with a multimeter while the engine is running. You should see something like 13-14 volts DC with the engine running, and 12+ with the engine off. If you start seeing a voltage drop while the engine is running, it's likely there's something wrong with your alternator. If so, you can have it doublechecked at vatozone.

Hello,
Thanks for the help. Found out I got an automatic starter instead, that's why it had the groove. Yes it was the alternator. Went to the junk yard and found one for 50 bucks. Stripped one of the bolts on my alternator, which was a b!tch to take off, and after that everything was fine.
Thanks H-T
