2000 accord coupe v6 when i put it in reverse it will make a bang after a second or so what is it?
i've got a 2000 accord coupe v6 auto. when i put it in reverse i can feel it engage and if i start moving back slow and then hit the gas a little or if i just hit the gas a little most of the time i hear a bang just once, i thought maybe it was the motor mounts? but i'm not 100% sure anyone else have this problem?
Sounds like mount. If heard/felt in reverse, likely the rear mount. If heard/felt in Drive, likely the front. If both, likely both.
By the way, tell the chick in the avatar to pull it down a little more.

thanks man, yeah i kinda figured that was what the problem is but i wanted to get a second opinion. how do you check to see if its bad? also that guy in your avatar is really good at hackie sack, i watched him for 10 minutes and he didnt miss once
Some Honda's use basic rubber in metal motor mounts. Those are easier to diagnose. You just look for the torn rubber. The front mount in your car and the rear mount are a different style and a bit harder to check.
I like to feel for clunks to check the front and rear. Do this in a safe place. Nobody around etc... Put the car in Drive. Apply the parking brake and step on the service brake. Pop the throttle open rapidly. You only have to give it a quick rap. You don't have to hold it down. You are feeling for a clunk when the engine applies torque. If you feel it while doing this in Drive, the front mount is likely bad. If you feel a clunk while doing the same thing in REVERSE, the rear mount is likely bad. However, mounts can go bad without sensing a clunk. When this happens you wont feel a clunk but a harsh idle ( lots of vibration ).
Keep in mind. There may be nothing wrong with your mounts. If you aren't sure, don't just replace them without having it checked out. They are very expensive.

it's ur trans about to go bye bye
honda accords from at least 94 forward use a vacum controled rear mount

i hope the tranny dont take a big old poop on me i just bought it. why would putting it in reverse and having a clunk mean the tranny is bad? i can feel it engage first before this happens its not like its slipping. is there any other way to diagnose if the transmission is the problem?

Mine does the same thing, has done it since i got it 130000 kms ago, has 300000 on it now.only does it in reverse, only does it once in a while, sometimes when you first start backing up, sometimes it takes a couple of car lengths before it clunks. you can really feel it though like something is under tension then lets go. Honda tech was no help, said trans was going, I guess its been " going" for 130000kms now. Trans doesn't slip
well that is definately good to hear i hope that is what happens to me i dont believe it is slippng in the forward gears but i've been wrong before, but just the way gorchard explained it is what mine does.
The reverse selctor is not fully engaged with the reverse gear on the countershaft.
The suggested repair is replacment of the transmission.
Good luck.

well i hope it dont need a tranny since like i said i just got the car not too long ago. but only time will tell

It sounds like you are getting apply pressure to the fourth clutch, but there may be a problem in the servo body, or with the reverse selector/shaft/shift fork assembly. Let it drop into reverse as gently as possible, don't just hit the gas. Save some $, you may be needing to overhaul this transmission.
