HF or Si?
hey everybody. im new to the forums. so basically im lookin for a crx but stuck whether or not to just go with the HF or wait for an Si. My neighbor is selling an ALL STOCK crx HF thats in very good condition. I was wondering if it would be smarter to wait and get an Si in the future? The bads with finding an Si is that theyre hard to find a stock engine clean title Si. Would i be able to make good mods to an HF? please and thanks everyone!
uh.. is this a trick question?
YES you should buy the HF.. its the best factory MPFI platform for racing there is.. It didnt come with sound deadening, and its rear drums were/are aluminum to save weight. If it is an '88 its the lightest ef made, and did i mention it is already wired for mpfi, which means no PITA mpfi swap. You basically need to buy it, throw the engine away, buy a b16 and a pw0 and some si/dx front knuckles, and you are in business. I have been looking for a clean HF for a long time, and have yet to come across one..
for a build/swap project, HF>SI for sure.

X2 on that.... if it's all stock and less than 1500 for a good condition HF it would be a bargain.

I would tend to agree, Hf's are very hard to find. ESPECIALLY if their unmodified. And if it's bone stock, please leave it that way. Or let someone who really wants a stock CRX Hf, and not a project, or race car, buy it. Like me for instance!!!
Worst case scenario, buy and flip it, for a profit.
Unmodified CRX's are an endangered species, that need to be saved, before they're all gone.

wait to get the SI.
and give me your neighbor's number
But really, go knock on his door right now and give him cash before someone else claims it.

There was one on my local CL a few weeks ago that was gone before I could even get done writing the email. I think it was on CL for an hour or two before I saw the listing.

haha i had an 89 that weighed like 1800lbs.. i went with the ZC swap and was raping B16s and GSRs and got lucky on a type S.. but like the first guy said.. its already mpfi so hop on that like u were hoppin on a hot virgin on prom night lol
and also with the hf... if u were to do a swap ul have 2 change the front spindles becuase they have an offset amount of teeth on the spline than the DX n SI.. id go with a DA set up with the master cylinder and prop valve just 2 have big brakes
Below is a weight chart. you can see why people who race them want them:
1988 CRX HF 1819lbs.
1988 CRX DX 1922lbs.
1988 CRX Si 2011lbs.
1989 CRX HF 1834lbs.
1989 CRX DX 2048lbs.
1989 CRX Si 2138lbs.
1990 CRX HF 1967lbs.
1990 CRX DX 2103lbs.
1990 CRX Si 2174lbs.
1991 CRX HF 1967lbs.
1991 CRX DX 2103lbs.
1991 CRX Si 2174lbs
the second reason is: the HF is already MPFI, just like the SI. the reason the SI is soo easy to swap is that you already have wiring for 4 injectors, where the civic STD hatch and civic and crx DX models need wiring ADDED to use 4 injectors, which isn't hard, but it is one more hurdle in order to swap the car. For a lot of people, the hardest part of a swap is the wiring, so having it done in factory form for you is valuable to a lot of people.
the weight factor shouldn't be understated either. The fact that the car has no sound deadening, and no impact beams in doors or on the front saves around 125-150 lbs in the 88-89 models. the 88 hf is a full 355 lbs lighter than the 91 si.. that is huge. I have done a LOT of weight reduction on my 91 si hatch, and it has only lost about 100lbs total.
While i wouldn't ever trade my 91 civic SI in its current form, i would absolutely trade my 91 civic DX hatch for a crx HF any day.

Another reason is that the Hf doesnt have a sunroof! Sunroofs are a nice idea but they wiegh to much and 99.9% of them leak.
There are many different things that are different on the Hfs and Sis, like drum brakes(easy fix), front bumper support(much much lighter), no rear wiper!, etc, etc...
My Hf had recorded getting 52 mpg once!

Well...have you heard?...Gas is OVER $4.00 a gallon!!!!
I wouldn't trade my Si for an Hf, but I would buy an Hf in addition to it, in a moments notice. Just because where else are you going to find a reliable, easy to fix, 40+ mpg car as a DD for under $2k? That also still happens to be somewhat stylish almost 20 years after its debut, oh and the best part is, it also just happens to be a HONDA too?
And the sad part is some people just keep hacking them up and swapping the few that remain, reducing the amount of a truly great, useful, economical car for no good reason...
Oh and one more reason, I'd buy an unmolested Hf ? If not for any of the reasons above, just to keep someone from needlessly modding it to race once or twice a year.

I agree...that's why I have 2 CRX HF's!
My Superior Blue Metallic 1988 CRX HF with factory installed A/C just 12 days after it was purchased.
I have every single reciept on this car dating back to the original window sticker!
(3 adult owners before me, never ever modified drivetrain besided it being lowered an stereo upgrade)

My white 1991 CRX HF, again I have EVERY single maintnace reciept (everything including oil changes) going back to the original sale's contract.
(2 adult owners before me, this one is BONE freakin' stock...look at the interior!)

Look how mint the console is...not cracked or broken like 99% of them!

both HF too!
red/stock
gray/swapped---selling it soon
to OP BUY IT!!!I would! Any time you get a chance at buying a CLEAN not rusted CRX just do it! Though I alway did kind of want a clean stock SI one, but yeah that leaky sun roof

You got some cleans CRX's there. The stock red one is an Si too?
I don't see any reason to hide my plate....I've never quite understood what that would do.
Haha...not being greedy just love having a 'spare' CRX on hand that will get me 40+ mpg. My blue one has more miles at 177K but it's still averaging 48mpg on the open highway...I'm sure I can crack the 50mpg barrier if I drove the speed limit
My white one is in even better condition (way less miles) and rides SO smooth compared to my blue one's coilover suspension.
In addition to my 2 CRX HF's I have this high mpg 4 seater 1983 rear wheel drive Toyota. It was rated for 42mpg city/54mpg highway in it's day. I just drove it a long distance and managed 40mpg in 2 hours of stop and go LA traffic and some poor choices of a lot of uphill climbs (thanks to my wonderful navigation's directions!)
. It didn't help any that I was hauling a spare set of wheels in the back and the heavy wheels it has on it either!
Ha ha...yeah I'm a high mpg car *****.
