Default Did I burn a valve ?

Last night I went to Maryland International Raceway in Budds Creek Maryland. It was extremely hot and humid so everyone wasn't running that great.

I put in three time trials, with a best of 15.3 down the 1/4mi. On the third run I'm against a mustang, when I shift into 2nd I notice power drop off and my exhaust is making a noticeably grumblier noise. I keep gunning it and the mustang beats me by a 100th of a second. I pull my car into the pit and its running like its miss firing and there is a stinky burn smell.

Im about to get a compresion test done, if anyone here has burned a valve id like to know what you did about it, how much it ran you etc. Thanks.

Sounds like your clutch is going away.

if it idles like that after feeling a drop in power I would
bet money that you have BENT a valve. sorry man
dont shoot the messenger... how many times have you
missed gears? if you drag alot, chances are you did when
you were a sucky driver. this weakens the valvetrain and
makes it more prone to spring bind, floating the valves
eventually. ask me how I know.

this stinky burn smell may be your clutch, but thats
separate from the engine idling like dog

No offense, but heres the part i dont understand. You shift into second, and hear wierd noises. Then you continue to gun it?!?!!? Doing so will only make the problem worse and cost more $$$ in the long run.

When your at the track doing timetrials, your not racing the guy next to you. Your racing the clock.

After reading your post again, check and make sure none of the spark plug wires came loose. NGK's are known to do that. I have zip ties holding mine on. Also if thats not the problem, you most likely bent a valve. Be thankful it didn't drop. Expect a bill of around $300 for labor and replacing the valve. You could also upgrade to ITR valve springs. Cheap route is take the inners from the intake side and move to exhaust. Then buy 8 inner ITR intake valve springs and install them. You can now safely rev to 8500rpm's with no worries.

you are absoutely right, just dont miss a gear.
I had this poor man's ITR setup. I missed a gear,
I bent 5 ex valves on the GSR ehxaust cam.

some people can break anything.

I now have:

ITR yellow outers all around
Portflow/ITR yellow inners all around
Skunk2 Ti retiners
Same ITR intake valves
Endyn 28.5 blk nitrided stainless flat ex valves

I have missed the 3-4 shift to 3-2 and revved past
9K this way and the engine did reveal a sputtery idle...
I reset the valve clearances and they moved a bit.
Once they were reset... no worries dynoed over 160/122
at the wheels consistently with no problems.

the ITR blue double springs are prone to coil bind over
8500. If'n you use your tired GSR intake springs...
dont miss a gear!

OK, Just for reference got this one fixed. Got my neighbor to run a compression test on all the cylinders, the first time he ran them cy. 4 was very low. tried again, turned out it wasn't sealed right and got a good reading on all 4 cylinders. A 4th inspection of the car turned up a loose ignition wire which was causing the misfire. So now im back to driving around like a maniac, ahhhhhhh.
