Default Shoei TZ-1 - Good buy?

Alright, I'm sick of my crappy HJC helmet. I'm looking for something to wear temporarily until I can afford a ballin one.

I found a slightly used Shoei TZ-1 on craigslist. The guys asking $150 for it. I haven't been able to find out much information on it... I'm assuming its the predecessor to the TZ-R. Anyone have any experience with it? What should I offer?

The TZ-R doesn't have rear vents either but since it vents out the bottom of the helmet, it does offer a cool breeze throughout the helmet and to the back of the neck. It's not bad at all. Wind noise is acceptable too.

No idea on the venting features of a TZ-1 though. I like my TZ-R.

Yeah, I saw it. I wonder if I can squeeze my head into a medium.

"For example, if you wear a Medium in the Arai (RX7 Corsair) you would need Large in the FF4 Polen."

Nope. Damn.

Any other suggestions on a relatively cheap helmet? Around 200-250

you should be able to get a used RF-1000 for about that price. i know when i tried to sell mine, everyone offered $200 for it.

some people like the scorpions, i might get an EXO-1000 eventually.

I'd hold onto the HJC and apply the money I would have spent on a intermediate helmet on the final purchase.

Unless the HJC is literally falling apart and unsafe of course.

I was considering a EXO700. I tried on the EXO-1000 - way too heavy for me.

The foam on the HJC is starting to deteriorate, and it's probably been dropped a few times throughout its life. Plus it's just uncomfortable.

I was also considering a Bell Apex.

You can buy a new TZR for 270 at newenough provided you don't need any graphics. I like mine much better than my old HJC, way lighter, vents better, despite the fact it doesn't have rear vents and is much quieter. I'd pass on a craigslist special, you don't know how its been treated.

That foam is what protects your head, get another lid. If your really deasperate, you could pick up a DOT helmet almost anywhere. A full face one, not a brainbucket.

i still have a shoei tz-1 helmet and compared to my rf1000, that thing was wayyy more comfortable. also, on my head the bottom portion of the padding wraps around the bottom of my jaw a lot better.

I've always been told to not buy a used helmet? You can never know what kind of condition it's in since a visual check can't really tell you if there's anything wrong with it.

I got a TZ-R to replace my HJC crappy helmet I had. The TZ-R was more comfortable, lighter, vented better even without rear vents, and didn't make my head look as large as the HJC. I got mine for $270
