Default AC compressor - new aftermarket or rebuilt sanden??

I'm not sure that I can trust the quality of a new aftermarket compressor for $300 vs a remanufactured sanden tr-70.

what do you guys think?

I'm pressed for time and need to make up my mind quick, any help would be great, thx.

Depends on who remanufactured it. If it's from Honda, yes. I'd stay away from the aftermarket stuff unless somebody else is installing it and it comes with a warranty.

exaclty my thoughts also...unfortunately honda does not sell remanufactured compressors for the 88-91 civic. I tried many all afternoon and they all seem to offer just limited remanufactured parts for certain models..here's an example:

http://www.hondapartsdeals.com...s.php

my choices are an ac shop here in town where the guy is testing my old one and can rebuild it himself if it checks out okay..meaning if the compression is good enough for a rebuild according to him, or if not then a new one that'll run $300.

I've seen the compressors on ebay running about $180 but I don't know who built them and how long they will last. some folks on here say that they got it from ebay and still running strong 2 years later.

the only place that seems legit to me so far is this place:

http://www.xtremeac.com/Products/1/Honda1.html

he has a brand new sanden compressor for $665 and a remanufactered for $235 are they genuine honda..I assumed it was but can call back to verify.

the guy who's in town seems to know his stuff very well...just don't know if he'll use cheap parts to rebuild it with or genuine honda rebuild parts.

I think I'm on to something here, these people say that they are the ones who supply the dealers with remanufactured stuff:

http://www.aircoparts.com/comp...52949

I'll have to dig more info on them.

okay here's my edit:

they are legit! here's why:

took awhile to find a # here it is:

thanks for the offer...what I need is a sanden TR-70 compressor...what I'm trying to do is install the entire ac system into a car that never had ac before and want to put parts that'll last me at least 10+ years without a hiccup so I won't have to do it again. If i can't find a reasonably priced remanufactured compressor then I'll keep your offer in mind. thx tho

okay final update:

the above company aircoparts seems to be out of business, don't even bother.

it occurred to me to check out who else but the manufaturer's website itself, sanden! they have a where to buy page of official sanden compressor dealers that also sell remanufactured compressors using sanden parts, so the guy I spoke with from airpro said.

here is the link:

http://www.sanden.com/products/wheretobuy.html

after 2 days of exhaustive research this was the best that I can do.

I went with airpro at the bottom of the page.

good luck compressor seekers!

final update part 2:

well after ordering with airpro I called carparts a few hours later inquiring about a condenser and while I was at it asked him about compressors since carparts is also on sanden's where to buy list. the guy told me that they no longer sell remanufactured/rebuilt compressors because if they sell 10 of them 11 come back. they have such a high failure rate that they don't even bother selling them anymore. is he full of it? I don't know, but did say that the new compressors that they do sell never come back and are just priced $100 more than the rebuilt ones.

dammit this sucks, well I can only wait for the one I ordered to come in and hope for the best. in the meantime I dug up a little more on compressors themselves and turned up a couple of "how to compressor rebuild" articles/forum. according to these people the compressor usually goes bad because of a worn out seal just like the main seal on the motor and causes the freon the leak. they took matters into their own hands and rebuilt it themselves fairly easily. are highly priced rebulit ac compressors the biggest scam in automotive history? well that's for you to decide. here are some links to those rebuild articles:

http://forums.nicoclub.com/zer...age=1

http://www.pelicanparts.com/te...d.htm

http://www.hotrod.com/howto/79....html

that was just the first page results of a google search if anyone finds any more you can post them here.

my compressor solution would be to rebuild my own after it craps out and keep an extra on the side to keep the down time to a minimum.

okay final edit:

after reading this next added link I realized that rebuilt compressor prices are based on what else? duh..labor. I'll do it myself thank you very much.
