Good Morning H-T.
New to me original CRX HF (1990) 5spd.
When cold it is most noticable (I have only put on a few dozen miles so I am still gathering data).
Get in the car. Put car in Neutral, push in clutch, turn key, cars starts right up, idles where it should, sounds good.
When I release the clutch pedal I get a noticeable whirring/'grinding' sound. Push the pedal back in, quiet. Seems to be noisiest when cold.
Great news is I have not changed the tranny fluid yet! I have 2qts of Honda MTF ready to go. Of course I will change the fluid before anything, but what does this sound like? Input shaft bearing? It's drivable like this with no worries, right? Might put on 30 miles between now and getting to the fluid change. Thanks guys, just wanted some input.
Oh yes, also, if you STARE at the tach, you can see it drop about 50 rpm when I release the pedal (and we get the whirring sound). But I am in neutral, so it shouldn't be the clutch dragging, right?

That's the one, throw out bearing... sounds familiar (I had another crx that did basically the same thing, but a LOT worse... wouldn't want to coast with it in gear it was so bad.
But clutch feels good... no history what so ever. Car sat for awhile, she needs a lot of help
, but my girl is very into helping me (new girl ftw). So looks like I may be able to save this one AND keep it.

Throwout bearing would make a noise when you have the clutch pushed in.
Input bearing would be when the clutch is disengaged.
I am having the same issue with my Crx Hf right now.

How long is 'a bit' (for driving safely)?
Also, isn't the clutch 'engaged' when the foot is off the pedal, and 'disengaged' when the pedal is to the floor?
Makes noise when the foot is off the pedal, or the clutch is 'engaged' in my point of view.

haha simply stated. with your foot off the pedal and if its making noise then its your input bearing (i believe 97%)
if it were when you were pushing the pedal in the clutch fork would push the throwout bearing against the pressure plate, and that is when the throwout bearing would make noise rather then when its sitting still doing nothing when you are driving with your foot off the pedal. (this is not your symptom though)
My .02 is that is your input bearing. which is located in the transmission. I have heard of people driving awhile with it like that.
When you change the fluid get a clean bucket and drain it in there. then run a strong magnet in the oil (bottom of the bucket) and see if there is metal shavings.
hope that helps.

As long as it won't cost me more money in the long run, I can run with a 'going bad' input shaft bearing... and it's only when cold...
Unrelated, I get a grind in higher rpms when cold, like 3200+ in 1st... (Yes, that's 'high', as 5k is my redline... vtecn8ive knows what I mean
).
I hope THAT goes away with new fluid, at least. This car sat a darn while.

You'll be fine for a while yet, as long as it isn't too terrible. I ran with a whining ISB for 40K miles before it went out on me.
Try changing your fluid to see if it helps with the whine and grind.
