my battery keeps on dying.. 2000 r1 :(
hello i just got a 2000 r1 at first the problem was that one of the wires on the rectifier came loose then we fixed it.. rode the entire day nothing till night time the battery died.. what can be wrong? i do ride like a bitch and shift under 4-5k rpms.. is that bad? does it not charge the battery when i shift that low? please help.. (im a beginner rider 3 days)
and going 45 mph feels fast already lol cars be passing me. even a scooter went faster than me.. hahah weird.
what rpms do you guyz shift and and what gear are you guyz in when cruising in the streets?
thanks

the way that the charging system on a bike works is that unless you are over 5k or so rpm you are not charging the battery you are just using the energy stored in the battery.
also get another bike, an r1 is way too much bike for you.

what? Care to explain how and why that works?
I'd check your rectifier again. It's possible that it shorted out. Make sure it has a good ground too.

That's what I've read as well. If the motor isn't spinning up past 5000 rpms then it's not charging the battery. Unlike car systems where the battery is being charged as soon as the car is running on a bike the battery is being USED as soon as the car is running and it doesn't stat charging until after the stator has spun up to 5000 rpms.
I would check the regulator/rectifier too though because if it's done then your bike will just keep gobbling batteries.
And if the R1 is your first bike and you're scared to ride it at 45mph, get a new bike (read smaller).

^^^ That can't be true for all bikes. My 919 has a redline at 9k, and commuting mostly surface streets, doesn't see 5k much. Comparativly a big bore v-twin can lug around all day under 5k.
I'm not too familier with bike charging systems, but that just sounds weird to me.

it probably is dependent on the bike. I got my info in relation to a honda f3 which has a fairly high redline.
Either way, if his batter isn't staying charged he probably needs to check his R/R

well someone checked the old battery and it read 12.4 volts but when he put a load on it it took a dump and went to 0.. bought a new battery today.. and going past 5k rpms when before i shift etc..
im not scared going fast. i just wanna take it slow.. this is literally my 3rd day riding.. i just learned how to ride 3 days ago. but im getting better..
r1 isnt that bad... oh and mine redlines at 12k rpms

best advice in this thread.
You need to be tapped through every gear, can't shift? leave it in third then.

We really need to install a sarcasm button in the Zeroforum software.

mmmmm.... from what I know, you don't need to exceed 5k rpm to charge the bike. If a new battery doesn't solve your problem I would get your alternator checked or bring it to a mechanic where they can see if there is anything that is draining your battery. Overall the electrical components on a bike should be powered by the alternator. If your alternator is bad, then the battery will have to compensate for the lack of power or you will have to run at higher rpms to compensate. That can lead to your battery wearing out much faster than desired. Typically above 2500 rpm should be enough for electrical sustainability without dependency on the battery.
On my 2004 R1 I shifted around 4-6K rpm, and I never had any electrical problems.

well with my old battery when it would die i would jump start it and ride it home as quick as i can but, when i turn it off and try to turn it back on it wouldn't start. so i think the generator or rectifier is good? we will see though just got my new battery today lets see how long it lasts..
I had the same problem on my 98 R1, I bought a new battery and it still died on me. Bought a new stator, and still kept dying. Then I noticed the plugs that connected to the R/R was burnt, so I bought a new R/R and rewired the plugs and viola problem solved. A lot of money spent just to find out it was the R/R, but the parts needed replacement anyways. Hope that helps.
Oh by the way, these guys are jerking you around because you bought a R1 as your first bike. Most people who go that high are squids and are just out to 'look cool'. A 600 is more than enough for most riders, but a R1 with a beginner is almost a death trap. If you really really really have the resistance to ride it slow, I suppose it can go slow and thus not kill you, but it is way less forgiving when you make mistakes on a Liter bike than a 600 bike. For a beginner than can mean that you are almost afraid of the bike, and thus not able to get comfortable riding it. You should really ride slow and learn how to ride and the proper techniques. Yes, shift at low RPM to keep the power levels down low, and go into highest gear as soon as you comfortably can without loosing too much power to get out of a situation if it arises. Anyone can twist the throttle and go fast, but you need to develop proper riding skills if this is a hobby that you seek to enjoy for a substantial portion of you life and you wish to live to enjoy it.
what is R/R?
and yes i can resist going fast.. all the people i ride w/ complain that i go way to slow... seriously the other day a lil scooter was going faster than me.. im taking my time. imma ride by myself for now they complain i ride slow too much. i go the speed limit.
i got into this for the cruise not the speed. only reason i got this r1 is because i got a pretty good deal..

If they aren't the ones allowed to dictate what a nub can ride, who the hell are you to have anything to say back? I think you're the one missing the read skills, you knock others for not addressing the issue, when infact you've done the same.
To the OP, I hope you have life insurance, because your family is going to need it. When you kill yourself, they're going to need the cash to take care of all the property damage you cause. And one last question, how does it feel to be a statistic?
It's your RR, they're known to go bad on those R1's.

I really don't feel like explaining this crap to another clueless noob. I feel like Bastian, in the middle of the Neverending Story, except there is no Childlike Empress waiting for me and my luck dragon is an SV650.

Those are pretty self righteous words from a man who claims to overheat tires on public roads.

I don't get what is with the deal with people all against litre bikes as a first bike. A bike ONLY has as much power as u gun the throttle. If you can handle it, go nuts.
