96 civic massive issue need help asap!!!!!!!
Hopefully someone here can help me before i start replacing parts and waisting my money. Before I state the problem car is a 96 civic DX w/ 98 y8 stock with basic I/H/E.
Basically the car will drive perfectally fine, and then all of a sudden as I'm accelerating it starts to pop and backfire and if I press the gas any more it will actually slow me down like i'm braking and kick back and forth. If I come to a stop the car will idle fine sometime just shutting off 1-3 times before it will stay started.
Idles fine and if I try to accelrate again same thing all over again. the only way i can drive is to rev up all the way and just dump it.
I make it home park it let it sit over night and sometimes it goes away and could be 1 day to 1 month before it happens again.Very aggrevating when i'm not close to home.
Car does not smoke or anything.I'm am throwing codes for 2nd O2 sensor (cause the straight back exhaust) and knock sensor.
I put a chipped p28(yes it was tuned) and disabled sensors, still same problem.
I have changed plugs and wires since and cap and rotor was replaced a year ago, nothing else seems to be wrong?
Previous owner def abused car and didn't take care of it at all.
sorry for the long post but just wanted to give all the info possible.
thanks in advance for any help so I can get this car back on the road.

kinda happened to me in my ej1 w/ b18b but it just hesitated but when i let off the gas it would be fine.
turned out to be a massive vacuum leak. my car never dies on me though. could also be a shitty tune. but what do i know i drive a VW now

Well considering how i was originally using stock y8 ecu when the problem ocurred, and then swapped to a tuned p28 ecu (using the proper OBD2a-OBD1 conversion harness)only to eliminate the sensors as my problem, and there was no change to how the car drove so I have y8 ecu back in.
Its wierd anytime we disconnect and reset anything (sensors and battery and ecu)or just let it sit it will go away and whamm just come right back.

This sort of happened to me before with my y8, i had a code for my map sensor and it would drive fine and idle ok but when i would be on the road and tried to accelarate on the road it would slow down a little and if i slacked the gas then pressed on it again, it would be ok.. well, turned out that my wiring to my map sensor was no good so i just clipped it and put a new clip on the map sensor....
A quick check because it always doesn't throw a code and tps and map are almost similar in problem.
Start the car unplug the tps see if the idle ramps up ?
if it does tps is good if not possible problem.
Then shut the car off and turn it back on. then check next sensor
The MAP... unplug see if the motor shuts off or starts to stutter if it does MAP is good if it doesn't the idle might go up map is bad.
I usually check the map first since it will effect fuel the most. but the tps will sometimes give similar problems. if your lucky just get another throttle body with the sensors and problem solved.

My old y8 was doing this intermittently. I removed the throttlebody and IACV and cleaned the **** out of them with brake cleaner and a toothbrush. Problem went away.
