Default i need to restore an expensive o2 sensor

ok i know this sounds bad, i need to clean or fix my o2 sensor. i have a 1998 civic hx manual, and if you know what that means, my pre-cat sensor is gold. its about $400 to replace, and i believe 600 from the dealer. i bought the car with the sensor broken off at the nut and its pigtail harness was gone, so i got a sensor, put it in, scanned it and everything was fine. kewl, so i bought the car. i have driven it for about 3 years now, and i also have a 1993 sol si. it was getting bad mileage and i couldnt find an explanation. my dad insisted i try this chevron with "techron" additive. and when i got it it was on a mega sale, so i got 2 i figured it would help my car a little. put it in the sol, went from 22 to 38 mpg! damn, mustve had a lot of deposits ont he valves or somthing. i put a bottle as per the directions int he 98 hx, and while driving that tank the light came on, i scanned it with my laptop, and it said po133 i belive and it was o2 sensor 1 slow response. i figured clear it, its just the fuel additicve, well that was about a year ago, and out of the blue 6 months ago it came back on , just like before i was in 4th gear, at abotu 40 mph, and the light came on, scanned it, po133, and i cleared it, then again a couple days ago it did it again, and then i realized what is hapeneing for this to happen so rarely, it only come on on the 2nd consecutive warm-hot restart. i know this is a very not so often light to go after, but i would like it to just stop. i definatly regret putting this stuff into a car with a wideband sensor. i learned my lesson, however, i really want it fixed right,a nd i dont want to replace the sensor, the other reason why i want it fixed, is before when the sensor was put in, and no chemicalks ever added, my fuel adaptations were fine, now its long term correction is added 10% according to my laptop. so anyways, please if anybody knows any ways to clean or restore an o2 sensor, please let me know. by the way since i got the car, i made sure no silicones went into the motor, and the only goop i used for the corners of the valve cover gasket [valve adjustment] was definatly sensor safe. if ic ant clean it, does somebady have a new or a good used sensor i can buy? i know this is the wrong forum for this and i have no intention to do this wrong, i will post a post just for this in the marketplace. thank you for your time

You have limited options as to what you can do.

The only thing i know of is to actually remove the sensor and lightly clean it off with brake cleaner on a rag. I stress lightly, becuase brake cleaner can ruin the sensor if sprayed directly on it. This is a minor repair and more of just a bandaid to cover up a worn 02 sensor.


The thing is, o2 sensors are either a hit or miss as far as working goes. Cleaning them off does minimal to no effect on their performance, so once the sensor is throwing codes, its pretty much done for, and youd be wasting time otherwise trying to fix it. I hate to say it, but its going to have to be replaced.

oxygensensors.com has them for about $300 shipped. I dunno if I'd blame the additive so much as you gotta figure that sensor is now 10 years old, it could just be done.

Does lengthing the wires of the o2 sensor effect it in any way? I lengthed my o2 sensor for the ITR headers on my EK. Lengthed them about 14-20"

P0133 is O2 Sensor CKT Slow Response (Bank 1 Sensor 1).

Honda's list price is $476.69. It's the most expensive 6th gen US Civic O2 sensor. While the secondary sensor comes on the D16Y7 too, the primary is only on the HX model.

that wont work....d16y5 is a 5 wire...not a 4 wire...and I feel your pain man....my primary took a **** on my 96 hx...but I dont have enough money to buy a new one yet.....so what little money I do have is now blowing out of my exhaust....in black clouds...haha

Heh!

I've been driving HXs for over 8 years - D16Y5 (OEM) & B16A2 (Si swap).

Most ppl don't even know what a HX is - vendors - insurance companies, yada, yada, yada...

HX sensors are sort of wideband-ish - almost laboratory grade.

They're 'the glue' that holds the whole lean-burn thing together...

IMHO there's NO way you're buying HX sensors on the cheap!

Sooo... he might as well bend over and take it like a man!

Okay, I went directly to the Bosch site and looked up the official part numbers...

Then I Google'd the part numbers for the best prices.

Upstream sensor (M/T) OE Type - Bosch 13025............................... $439.95*

So, there you go...

There's a HUGE difference in price between the M/T & A/T OE upstream sensors - almost unbelievable!

The Downstream OE sensors are the same. That I believe sorta!

But, supposedly, ALL the universal sensors are the same - M/T, A/T, upstream, downstream... HELLO?!?!?

LoL!

I'm having a hard time believing ANY of this...

If it was me, I'd ask around about this before jumping off the cliff!

Has anybody here actually used these O2 sensors on a HX?

Just curious! I might get another D16Y5, when gas is $20/gal...

Yes, extending O2S wires may cause problems. O2S wires use shielded wires which is to prevent electromagnetic interference. O2S produces very little voltage so any interference could make the readings go whacko. Only correct way would be to buy premade O2S extension harnesses.

I've seen many poor reports/reviews of Bosch O2 sensors - dittos for their plugs! Now I'm starting to see why...

I just used Bosch as an example because somebody linked to them above, and there's some confusion as to which sensor the OP really needs.

Anyway, if ppl are replacing $400 wideband upstream OEM sensors with $50 Bosch universal sensors, so called... I can see why they're getting a bad rep!

how would i check to see if is negatively affecting my engine? and, if i install a wideband does it take the place of the o2 sensor?

How is your gas mileage? The way i was taught would be to back probe the O2 to an O-scope and check the readings to see if the o2 is switching in spec. if your gas mileage isn't bad and there is no CEL, i wouldn't worry too much.
