MUGEN INTAKE, WORTH IT?
hey guys im looking to start my fun all motor build. later this year plan on building a 2.0 or 2.1 motor. been lookin for a mugen intake or somethign that i know will make good power. the aem cai i have now is decent but it rains and snows in chicago. is it worht the price tag or does anyone know a decent equivalent. dont wanna just get a shortram and lose power
im not talkin price in general asking if it makes the best power some people claim. talked to one guy and he told me for 30mins how it is one of the best by design. and its a 500 used or 780 new
You'd be better off searching or asking this question in the ITR forum. I know many over there have ran this intake. For the price, no I dont think it's worth it when you have people making power gains with SRI and CAI with vstack/filter combo on the end.
The choice comes down to you though.

i was just reading the vstack info actually and ya they seem to make power. i figure ill run a vstack or soemthing cause mugens too exp it looks like. would still like to see pics installed and stuff. ut vstack just seems good for the money. gotta call up bpi dont know if hes around anymore
i can get a hytech rep for a decent price not a pos one either. and i wont touch valvetrain till i build the head though. thinking more like supertech and itr or a little more aggressive cam. just looked at a few dynos and it does outpeform most of whats out there

no dyno on my motor..
However a jdm b16a with bolt ons and ctr cams made 136whp with the mugen, just dropping it in made 141whp w/o tuning, guy ran out of time on the dyno i wasn't tuning it, a buddy was doing it himself, but i was there for advice.
it made over 4whp more over the map, and it peaked at 141.. AFR was tuned a tad bit rich on the 12.9 side.

Have either of you used a Mugen intake?
I will say that I have seen dyno plots of the ARC back in the day and I classify it with the J's Racing intake.......... JDM bling.
However, I have used the following intake systems... drop in filter, AEM SRI, AEM CAI 2.75", AEM CAI 3", and the Mugen. I would rate them in this order, Mugen, AEM 2.75", AEM SRI, drop in filter, AEM 3". All for a DC2.
You never mentioned which version of the Mugen intake you are looking at. I like the Mugen, it is a quality piece. If you want "bang for the buck", stay away from the Mugen.

When I went to the dyno with my friend, we tested 3 intakes set-ups.
Stock ITR, Mugen, Samco arm w/ BPI stack and K&N filter. This was on a DC2.
I don't recall the exact numbers, but I do know that there were gains all over the Mugen using the Samco/BPI intake.

I don't deny the Mugen as being a quality piece. I however am unable to justify the price of an intake that yields neglegable results when compared to less expensive pieced together products.
I'm sure everyone has different results, but from what I witnessed, the Mugen didn't perform the way I felt a $500+ intake should have. I'm a broke college kid, it's all about "bang for the buck" in my eyes.

Look again. The Mugen has a velocity stack and the snorkle that runs down to the wheel well is 4x's as big.

I upgraded from a stock ITR box w/out resonator to the Mugen ITR intake which helped push my traps to 100mph+. The quality is top notch and the fitment is good considering it belongs in an ITR and not a 99 Civic. I'd buy it again.

and i bet it was STILL cheaper than the mugen intake lol
