hey guys, I was wondering if you could help me. A few weeks ago, I checked the tension on my timing belt. I am running toda bs with a toda timing belt. I use the coat hanger method of adjusting the belt. I checked the bumper side and firewall side of the belt and it looked good. The only place that the belt looked questionable was the part on top of the cam gears. It was pretty loose there, maybe half an inch of deflection. I did all this at TDC. My buddy told me not to adjust it because it was tight enough. Another reason I'm worrying is because I am a little new to DIY and did not turn the crank 3 teeth on the cam gear when I tightened the belt. Please share your expertise.
Hey man, sounds like your ok, but what I usually do it put it to TDC, then turn the crank slightly till the additional slack is on the tensioner side (in your case firewall side) and I get someone to put pressure on the tensior with the coat hanger again while I loosen the bolt and pull the slack out of the timing belt.
Tighten it back down and turn the crank three times back to TDC and see if it all lines up and how the tension feels. BE SURE NOT TO OVER TIGHTEN! You can cause alot of wear on your journals and your belt will whine if its too tight. Theres a lot of articles on this, if you search you can find what your looking for, but the way I just said always works for me.

so you're saying turn the crank counterclockwise till it's loose on the firewall side, then tighten the belt? What I was most worried about was the slack at the cam gears.

I'm saying turn it until you get slack on that side (hence there should be hardly any slack elsewhere) and tighten it up again. And then turn the crank counterclockwise 3 times and check TDC.
