Default How to ID transmissions?

Is there a database that I can use to ID used Honda transmissions by the number tag on them? Or is there another good way to ID the trans?

I'm looking at a transmission that supposedly came out of a CRX, but the guy doesn't know what year or model it came out of. Only that it is a 5 speed and he was going to put it in his civic to replace the 4 speed.... The only external ID that he can find is a tag that has the following number: L3-2332112.

Any help would be appreciated. The price on the trans is pretty good, so if I don't jump on it right away somebody else probably will.......

Search the CRX/Civic Forum FAQ please! I found this in there:

And for the year:

Found this as well with a simple Google search:

Sorry about that. I've gotten used to forums with non-working search functions and stickies that are bloated with too much info to be useful to somebody not familiar with them already. I googled the tag number but didn't get anything so rather than muddling about I just figured I'd ask......

Anyway, thanks for the info. That's basically what I was looking for.

Other than "L3" the rest is a serial number that does you zero good. I wish we did VIN tags a long long time ago for parts identification. Would make life so much easier.

Ayup. At least I've got it narrowed down a little, The guy knows it came out of a '90 CRX... either a DX or SI.... To me both are the same. I'm probably going to look into finding an HF differential to throw into it eventually, but for now I can't beat the deal with a stick.

As an aside, is there any rhyme or reason to which transmissions Honda put LS differentials into? Was it just SI models, or was there some other determining factor? If I'm not mistaken, it's easy enough to tell just by looking at the side of the trans where the axle flanges are, right?

No LSD's in the US market for CRX's. Yes, a quick visual will tell if one was installed.... clear view through the differential (axle holes) = LSD

BTW I have a HF Final drive set (ring gear and countershaft) that I can sell to you.

dx tranny has longer gear ratio,si is shorter(more meant for the track)..........

That's got my ears twitching... I only paid $75 for the complete trans. Would that final drive set be price appropriate?

Si and DX have the same gear ratios with the only difference being the final drive ratio which regulates how fast you go through those gears. The rpm change in between shifts is the same in either one.

The difference between the DX and SI final drive is relatively minor. But the HF trans has a substantially taller final drive, AND taller gearing if I remember correctly. Since the HF engine is a much lower revving engine, that's necessary. With the DX and SI engines revving to 6500/7000 rpm though, those tall gears might put the engine out of it's optimum operating rpm range. I'm hoping that the DX/HF will be a good compromise and keep the highway rpm high enough that the engine isn't trying to bog down (which would reduce FE substantially), but low enough to yield good FE both around town and on the highway.

We'll see if it works.....
