Default Getting Toda Spec A's, Can I use this without valvetrain replacement if I stay at stock redline

I am planning to get the Toda Spec A's for my GSR but use them only to the stock redline for now. Do I need to change the springs, and retainers or am I ok? I am also planning to get a custom chip for them as well as a VAFC and cam gears. I am looking for a very streetable setup which needs minimal tuning and will see some track time. I have 10.6 compression already as I have a JDM GSR. What are your guys suggestions?

Thanks,

AW

Toda's site recommends ITR valvetrain, but you should be ok. the lift on those cams aren’t that high. Just keep it stock redline tho, and you should be cool

Check w/ Toda carefully, b/c the ITR valves are lighter, so the valve springs are actually not quite as stiff as the GSR's. I think if you use Titanium retainers and ITR springs you'd be OK. Don't know this from first hand experience, just what a knowledgeable person told me.

move your intake springs to the exhaust side and get some ITR intake springs.

Even though the ITR valves are lighter, their valve springs are more aggressive. They have to accomodate for the larger cams and increased redline. I'm not sure, but i'm pretty sure honda would not "degrade" the valve springs from the GSR to the Type R.

skunk2 stage 1s
ITR yellow intake springs all around
portflow/itr inners all around
skunk2 ti retainers
keep stock redline until you reinforce
bottom end
raise redline with no worries

Even though the ITR valves are lighter, their valve springs are more aggressive. They have to accomodate for the larger cams and increased redline. I'm not sure, but i'm pretty sure honda would not "degrade" the valve springs from the GSR to the Type R.
ITR valve springs are " better designed" to handle the higher redline, but not necessarily stiffer. so less stiff doesn't necessarily mean degradation.

Here: http://integra.vtec.net/carboy.html

"The valve springs are not cylindrical, but flat -- and made of dual-bound springs. This prevents the surging effect at high rpm's, and avoids any interference with the pistons. The cut-off area of the springs are done with the most extreme care.
Bigger valves have their advantages, but are heavier. The Type R's valves were redesigned so as to have a bigger cone area, but still be 12% lighter."

I'm no expert, that's for sure. But springs should only be as stiff as the cams/valves require, otherwise power can be lost at that level. I wasn't trying to tell the original poster what to do, just suggesting that he checks first. If Toda says OK to use ITR springs alone, by all means go for it.

Here's what Toda/AKH reps told me when I inquired:

Quote:

"Thanks for your inquiry. With Spec A's you have 2 options:

Option 1
-Use TODA valve springs with your stock GS-R valve

Option 2
-Use Integra Type-R INTAKE valve springs (32 total) on both the intake and
exhaust side of your GS-R head along with ITR intake valves.

Most of our GS-R customers go with option 1 since it's about the same price,
but our valve springs allow for higher revs.

Best regards,
AKH Trading/TODA Racing" <end of quote>
