Someone wanna explain vtec to me?
I got a new honda here and I hear Vtec this and Vtec that. I heard some guy talk about his car going into Vtec?
I've got an 02 3.0 Vtec and am not sure what the fuss is about. I know in general honda engines like high revs and so far I haven't gone much past 3000-3500 (breakin period)

VTEC - variable timing and lift electronic control
there's three kinds of VTEC these days. SOHC VTEC, DOHC VTEC, and the new iVTEC. Not sure which the V6's operate with but its probably similar to the SOHC VTEC which only affects the intake valves. At a programmed point int he RPM band (the cross over point) a hydraulically activated pin engages a larger cam lobe which throws you into VTEC.

Vtec uses oil pressure to lock the cam into a "Wild" racing profile when you excede a certain RPM. It gives you a few extra HP while keeping your low RPM engine speeds fuel efficient.
The V6 is a SOHC Vtec the 4's are either SOHC or DOHC and the new civics use a 3 stage Vtec allowing wild cams at the top, normal in the middle and ultra lean for max fuel ecomomy on the bottom. I have heart A/F mictures in the order of 20 to 1

Wild cams!
The hi cam profile on a SOHC VTEC is still more for economy than racing. Now the Type R cams or Prelude Type S cams are more like race cams. They are certainly not wild.
