painting the turnsignal reflectors
i was wondering that if i painted the reflectors on the turnsignal black if it would make it less effective. like, if it would be harder for others to see the turn signals. thanks.
i have a picture to explain what im talking about,

thanks.

Painting over the reflector is a no-no. You won't pass inspection if you have it and you may get hassled by cops. All vehicles must have an orange reflector at each front corner.
I say leave it just like it is. Looks real nice IMHO, looks OEM even. Doing anything to that reflector will just cheapen the look I think.

I've asked several cops in my area about the color requirements for front signals -- either white or amber.. They said they werent sure, but its not something they'd pull me over for. The DID say that rear must be amber- which I'm keeping.. But my fronts are going white.
No problems yet.
Check with your locals..
If you're in Stockton CA, chances are you're [freak]ed.. haha.

shows you how much they know, rear reflectors MUST be red, no other colors. Unless you meant to type red.

What are we talking about here?
I'm thinking of turn signals. (Why would anything else be amber up front?)
REAR laws: Brakes must be red. Reverse must be white. Signals must be amber.
FRONT: Unsure, signals white/amber. Fogs: yellow/blue/white.
Legally, no blue or green, or any other color aside from red/white/amber. HID's are acceptable now because thats scientifically a different color- but they can PROBABLY tag you if you have blue housings on your shitty headlights on your "cool white" signals.

typically turn signal lights must be amber up front, red or amber in the rear. brake lights must be red.
taillights must have red lenses so that stupid or old people don't think you're driving backward....heh

Actually if we're talking US federal law, front turn signals can be any shade from amber to white. However, the front side marker lamp needs to be amber, and in many cars the same bulb is used for both (like most Civics), forcing the turn signal to be amber to keep the marker amber.
I can't speak on State laws that might be more strict than federal laws.

guarantee you that if you had white turn signals and you came across a cop who cared, you'd get a fix-it ticket. I got friends in high places

yeah I have never seen a US-spec production vehicle with stock white turn signals up front. Even those with separate turn signal bulbs had either amber bulbs, or amber lenses.

Eh, according to the absolute letter of the law, neon under the car is technically legal (provided the bulb itself is not visible, just the projected light on the ground), but you'll probably get a ticket for it anyway. So, legal doesn't always mean ticket free, just as illegal doesn't necessarily mean you will get a ticket.
I don't have front side reflectors (clear corners on an Integra), never been ticketed for it. I had white front turn signals (amber now, to match better), but the Integra uses 2 bulbs in the corner lamp so my side markers were amber, with the front marker and signal white. I even had a cop inspect them while giving me a ticket for a missing headlamp, who decided to thank me for using amber side marker bulbs in it to "stay legal" (it isn't). Eh, YMMV.

Turn Signal Lamps
24953. (a) Any turn signal system used to give a signal of intention to turn right or left shall project a flashing white or amber light visible to the front and a flashing red or amber light visible to the rear.
(b) Side-mounted turn signal lamps projecting a flashing amber light to either side may be used to supplement the front and rear turn signals. Side-mounted turn signal lamps mounted to the rear of the center of the vehicle may project a flashing red light no part of which shall be visible from the front.
(c) In addition to any required turn signal lamps, any vehicle may be equipped with supplemental rear turn signal lamps mounted to the rear of the rearmost portion of the driver's seat in its rearmost position.
(d) In addition to any required or authorized turn signal lamps, any vehicle may be equipped with supplemental rear turn signal lamps that are mounted on, or are an integral portion of, the outside rearview mirrors, so long as the lamps flash simultaneously with the rear turn signal lamps, the light emitted from the lamps is projected only to the rear of the vehicle and is not visible to the driver under normal operating conditions, except for a visual indicator designed to allow monitoring of lamp operation, and the lamps do not project a glaring light.

There's the law. Decide for yourself what you are willing or not willing to do to your car. Personally, I like getting "fix it" tickets. I can't count the number of times I've heard "I'm letting you off with a warning for going 85, heres a ticket for the window tint.". 30 minutes of my time, swapped window glass (yes, I have a 2nd set of windows), and $25 in paperwork fees, and I go get the ticket cleared with no points on my record...

You can look up the code in most states. Just google it by entering your state + vehicle code or vehicle title code or something.
In AL it is 32 title code.
By the way, most cops wont mess with you too much for personalizing part of your ride. Everyone is different, but there are lines you dont cross.
In AL, it is fairly simple.
A basic overview is white or amber lights to the front, amber on the sides forward of the centerline and red on the sides behind. Red for stop, red or amber for turn signals. White for reverse.
And the nasty little thing about the tag light. Light for the tag light must be illumination only, no visible bulbs, and white light only.
As I said, its a basic list. I can look up more specific stuff if needed though.
