Default 97 Civic SI Overheating....

Hey im new to this site, and was just wondering, I have a 97 honda civic si, and up until last september ive had no problems with it overheating, but more recently now that it has gotten hotter out it seems to happen more repeatedly, about 2 months ago I did a complete flush on the radiator roughly 5 times, ran water and a solution i bought at a store through each time, the engine is bone stock, just clean exterior stuff. Anyways, I hoped that that may solve my problem but it hasnt seemed to, when its overheating Ive checked the hoses and they both seem to be hot, not sure if thats just cuz of the engine block heat or..... but that kinda leads me to think that my thermostat should be working, but when i originally took it to honda awhile ago they told me my fan wasnt turning on, and they unplugged it, plugged it back in and voila, it was working again, so im not sure where to check because when im on the highway doin like 140 it seems to stay at a fairly normal temp until i hit cities, and it heats up, which leads me to think maybe the fan. But I dont know about my water pump because ive never replaced it, yet i was told if it was my water pump that my car would basically overheat ALL the time, yet it only overheats once in awhile. So any guidance or ideas would be greatly appreciated, if anyone wants me to add anything just let me know, once again everything is stock, my air filter is new, flushed the rad, and yea im outta ideas besides the thermostat or fan, so thanks guys

couple thing to check for your fan jsut make sure its turning on let your car idle or drive it and make sure its turning on if it is then your fan is fine and a way to check your thermostat is to either buy a new one and put it in they are cheap or take thermostat out and run w out on for just a lil bit it will be okay will jst take a lil longe to get to wram i have done it may time to check if thermostat is the problem. i would see if either of those are the problem first

So Ive checked before and ran my car/ let idle, and the fan did come on when its staying at the medium temp, but when my car has been driving hotand the temp fluctuates alot, ive pulled over to check, and the fan wasnt on, which gets me to the next point, whereas im curious if it has something to do with the fan unit, or the relay, or something else, im not extremely knowledgeble under the hood of vehicles, so i cant really figure it out on my own . But thanks everyone for the feedback, it definitely helps alot, but if anyone has any suggestions where to go next checking the fan unit, (assuming its not working properly) like turning on sometimes. thanks

my friend's integra would overheat if he idles at a red light, but once he got going temps would drop back to normal position. The problem was air inside the cooling system, so we bled the system until ALL the air came out. not sure if your D series engine has a bleeder valve on the engine like his b18a1.

learned something new=]. Blasting the heat on max with the windows open can be your temp fix for now until you get someone to look at it.
