Replaced front suspension now wierd thump
I just replaced my front suspension parts (uca, lower ball joints, inner and out tie rod ends) on my 90 crx. I have yet to have it aligned but it is damn close, relative to how it was before it is great! When I am driving and accelerating everything is fine, but as soon as I let off of the gas and coast (either with the clutch in or out) the car shakes and makes a horrible thumping sound and it also makes a slight grinding or scratching sound. Is this just the bad alignment or is it possibly the axle?
Thanks

The allignment shouldnt make any thumping noises or grinds unless it is COMPLETELY out of wack (wich you said its not) or somthing is loose along with a bad allignment... It sounds to me like a bent axle or posibly one or the other isn't all the way into the tranny...
Ok, I'll check it out tomorrow. Should it be easy to tell if one of the axles is in fact not properly mounted in the transmission?
Thanks

yep, if you look where they enter the tranny they should fit pretty snug to the tranny, you shouldnt be able to see any off the actual shaft on the end of the axle
Ok, I just got under that car and I found that the passenger side axle can be easily remove, but instead of a spline (on the tranny side) I fount a shaft with three bearings so I'm assuming that this is the cv joint that is bad and is the cause of the sound and vibration?

No, I believe it is still in the tranny but the axle is separating at the cv joint. I see a shaft with three short studs protruding and each of those studs has bearing that keeps falling off.
still a lil confused... but either way your gona need to replace the axel... and i would recomend replacing both at the same time but if the wallet wont let you, its no big deal...
If you're looking at the pic, on the left side, the accordion boot is there, but right there it breaks away from the black cylinder (on the left). I think what I am seeing is the guts of the boot (on the left). How do I get the rest out of the tranny?

Right.
but you might need to put a little prybar or flathead screwdriver in between the actual axle and the trans casing to give a little "persuation" getting that retaining ring to pop out sometimes takes some effort.

DOnt pull.
thats where you meesed up and now your seeing the 3 pronged greasey *** axel with the bearing falling off on each post.
You have to pry it out from the tranny and axel.
You cant pull on the axel or your ganna mess it up.
I did this when changing my clutch.
But im good with my hands and put the axel backtogether and fastened the rubber boot so it cant come off, and seals the grease inside.

Hello again.
Ok, I got my new half drive (passenger side) and it is now installed. That took care of the shaking and the thumping, but now there is a scratching/rubbing sound whenever I make a left turn; is this just the alignment being off sense I replace all of the suspension components? I am getting it aligned tomorrow, but I wanted to be sure. Also, when I have the car on the jack stands and I grab the tires at 12 and 6 o'clock positions, the tire moves slightly. I'm assuming this is the bearings? Geez, its always something.

it's hard to bend an axle but anything is possible ,a cv shaft not being in the tranny is more likely

It ended up being a bad (really bad) cv joint. It had totally fallen apart.

Oh yeah, for some reason when I have the car on the stands and pop it into gear and release the clutch, only the driver's side axle spins; is this normal?

As it turns out, I just realized that the axle I installed does not have the damper (the round disc in about the middle of the axle) like the one picture above. Is this okay or will I experience problems?
Thanks
Thanks
