Custom turbo kit or brand name kits?
This post is for a friend who knows nothing about turbo, but he's planning to invest his savings into turbocharging his 2000 Si; I'm trying to find the best route for him, so please help us here. Someone told him he can save alot of money if he put together a kit (but brand new stuff, though) instead of buying a brand name kit such as DRAG, RevHard, etc. But then, we question reliability. Will the custom kit be as reliable, and if so what should we go with....turbonetics turbo?, etc.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Thanks for any suggestions.
A custom kit will be just as reliable as the parts you buy. If you dont cut any corners, reliability wont be an issue. I have been putting my own kit together, and it is going to end up costing me allot more than buying a kit. The cheapest way is not allways the best way.

custom all the way, you can build better piping, run better spec turbo for your application, etc.
Not to mention the most important, Fuel Management!

Exactly, I went all custom and if I had to do it again I would do the same thing. I selected a smaller turbo than what the kits provide so I could shift the powerband towards lower rpms slightly. I use a T3 60 trim .60A/R compressor with a .48 A/R Stage III turbine. Most kits use a T3/T04B for my engine, which would have made more top end power, but sacrifices some low and mid-range power. I have a daily driver and wanted spool-up to be quicker, thus the smaller turbo.
Okay, then we're gonna go custom. Thanks for the replies also....
Can you guys now help us make a complete bolt-on parts list and where to get these parts for a good price; keep in mind it's for a 2000 Civic Si. Thanks.
