Default 2002 Cylinder 3 misfire... options?

Hi all,
I recently purchased and 2002 Accord SE, for a cross country move. Well about 2/3 of the way the the trip, the Check Engine light came on and I had it looked at in Denver, CO. The Auto-Tech at the dealership did a compression test and said that it was due to a burned out exhaust manifold or valve on cylinder 3. The repair was either to replace the cylinder head and all components, have the head shipped out and "R n R'd" (Remove and Replaced) and the cost of the that was quoted at 1700$. The other option was a new motor!!!
again... I just bought this car

my question is... are there any alternatives to this? is it possible to replace just the valves on cylinder 3? is there anyway to get the car back to stable condition that would cost less then 1000$

I am currently in Fullerton, CA (next to anaheim, in Orange County) so if there are any local shops, preferably with a reputable name... that would be ideal.

Thank you

Matt
