Ready for Smog????
Just about ready to smog my gsr. Fixed the CEL and replaced the little filter on top of my vc to the breather hose. But small amounts of smoke is coming out from the back of my exhaust. Not a lot but enough to notice a few puffs here and there. Is this something I should worry about or anything else? smoke looks black. Because I bought the car a few weeks ago and i'm clueless on what it is capable of. Everything pretty much looks stock except for the NGK spark plug wires and no AC and it looks like it has 2.5 piping. any advice before I actually go to the shop would help. thanks
Have them do a pre-test to see where your car's emission numbers stand. That way they will tell you if you car will or won't pass the actual smog test. Because if your numbers are too high, they will label your car as a gross polluter and then you will have to take your car to a test only shop.
Taken from the CARB website
Black Smoke: Excessive or too much black smoke from the muffler is almost always due to a rich fuel mixture and will produce high CO, and consequently high HC during the smog check or inspection.
White Smoke: A vehicle emitting excessive white smoke from the exhaust may have a burned or blown head gasket. A blown head gasket may cause overheating and high NOx emissions. Most often the level of NOx produced will be twice the allowed limit, rendering your vehicle as a gross polluter or HEP.

That's right, I've even seen billboards on the freeway to report cars that are smoking and gross polluting the air. That's actually a good idea cause I hate driving behind these ***** in traffic.
We'll see if they started getting stricter on public transportation and diesel vehicles.
