When your ECU detects a major problem it goes into limp mode. It basically dumps an ***-load of fuel into the engine to make sure you make it home.

Check to see if you have any CEL codes, the method is in the FAQ.

go buy a bulb and check because thats what happen to my friends B20. i think it's your ECU

this has happen to me before, but it was cause of my knock sensor i think? im not to sure.

i had the same problem at different rpms... i was given the ckp code for the crank position sensor and even after changing that still had the problem.. ended up being my ecu switched that out everything was good

I had that problem after my b16a swap too, except mine hit rev-limiter at about 4K... it turned out that it was my obd2-obd1 conversion harness... i got a new harness and problem solved!
My old harness was in really bad shape, it had been spliced back together in multiple spots... so i dont know if that would be your problem too, but its worth checking into...

check valve timing.

put a new timing belt on it and put it in time again, mine was doing the same thing, and i just replaced the timing belt and put it in time, runs like a champ
