Troubleshooting Fuel Evap System
Hi,
I have a 1995 Accord with 204,000 miles on it. I'm in CA and recently failed a smog test. It was a test only place so all they could tell me was the visual/functional check for the evap system failed. I'm using the Haynes manual to trobleshoot and I believe the charcoal canister is the problem. What i've done is checked for vacuum at all the hoses leading from the intake manifold to the the feed tube that leads to the fuel tank. I am finding vacuum from the intake manifod, before, and after the evap valve, but no vacuum from the hose between the charcoal canister and the feed tube. Also, the vacuum also only appears when the engine is reved. Is that how it should be? Thanks in advance for any help
Mike

im having the same problem with my 90, first check your gas cap unscrew it... it should make a hissing sound by relieving the pressure if not you definitley got a leak back there or leading up to the engine.....which is hard to determine unless you have a smoke test performed which usually runs about $75 which is wack.
The guy at the test only place said that it would not be my charcoal canister and that it was in gas tank area........follow what your manual says about vacumn coming to and from the manifold and canister!... if you want to replace it, try a salvage yard or ebay dont go buy a new one just yet because it might be a rubber hose above or by your gas tank so check your gas cap first!
funny thing is we were one year off (if ur in california) they just started this **** 11/2007 so if it was last year at this time we would have passed! I think they are just trying to get our old cars (especially mine) off the highways!
hope this helps a little

need to get a smoke machine and check for leaks. There should be atleast one service station around that has one. Call around. Its a little machine that shoots smoke in to the evap service port. Then you check the whole systems, lines, gas cap, canister. Stuff like that.
