I'm looking at buying a VIS OEM-style carbon fiber hood.

However, I'm not too fond of how hood pins ruin the look of the hood.

Can any members here who have CF-hoods on their cars provide some good suggestions for alternatives to pins for securing the hood properly?

 

you can just use the OE hood latch. I have pins on mine but I use the latch. it has never came open when I am driving.

 

Aerocatch hood pins are damn sexy.

Flush mount is nice. Google em and see what you think.

What's wrong with the OE latch that it comes with? I have had a carbon fiber hood on my civic for 3 years now, and have taken my car over 100mph+ on the track with just the OE latch, no pins or anything else...never had a problem..

 

Haha, I had probably the same exact thread title a while back. I just suckered up and put hood pins. In the end, I had a terrible experience with them and would've probably rather stuck with the stock hood.

The only other option on the market are those aerocatch hood pins.

And to those who say "mine hasn't slammed against my windshield/roof while driving yet."
-I really don't think it's worth the risk. The companies don't tell you to use hood pins with their CF hoods for sh*ts and giggles.

Yea never had a prob with mine with no hood pin's i dont like hood pin's i have seen other peep's hoods crack from them.

 

My hoods never popped up with my oem latch.

 

if you dont feel safe with the oe latch fab some kinda of extra securety. Be creative lol.

Everyone always has close-up shots of these. Does anyone have far away shots? I would like to see how it blends in with the car/hood.

 

 

Would you guys say that VIS is a reputable brand when it comes to carbon fiber hoods?

Is it normal for someone to get some additional spot welding done around the latch area for extra reinforcement?

 

VIS is the best carbon fiber you can get on the market I believe. That is why it is super expensive.

IMHO, i had VIS products....they are built good as far as structural integerity but other than that they suk.....they fit like *** and fade after a while IF you dont have it clear coated by a body shop.....SIEBON on the other hand (from what i have seen on other cars) is a far superior product, fitment is exellent and overall quality is better....but this IS JUST MY OPINION!!!!!! and to the OP....your stock hood latch will werk just fine...

this are pimp....i would put these on a stock steel hood....

 

The reason manufactures tell you to install hood pins is because the male part of the latch (hood side) is only attached via CF or fiberglass (you can't weld it stronger and if you apply a big glob of extra CF/FG the hood will shrink funny in the sun) And as many of you have stated, CF tends to crack under stress ( as often seen while installing hood pins). Granted, not very often do you hear about hoods flipping up, but every once in a while due to vibrations, heating/cooling, ram-air effect lift or some fat chick bent over it, a weakness will develope around the latch. Hence hood pins. I really don't like the look either but......

are the pins their to reinforce or for security when it does brake the hood latch

 

dang those hood pins look nice! and they have a lock......
that alone is good for security! hell i might have to add those to my stock hood

so if you use these flushmount hood pins on CF hoods do majority of them peel and crack and what not?

 

You could go with leather straps similar to those on vintage cars

 

I had a carbon fiber hood on my civic for like 4 years and took it up to 129mph, never any problems. OE latch.
