y1 lsd w/f.d. in a j1?

y1 lsd w/f.d. in a j1?
if i wanted to pop a y1 lsd with the longer final drive in a j1 would i have to also swap the pinion gear? my guess is that the teeth wouldnt match correctly, anyone done this? can i take the pinion from the y1 and swap it over into the j1 to make it work?
