This question has been asked before i bet but ium going to ask it anyway... so i drive a 1996 Acura Integra GSR, 181k miles on it... im saving up for a swap cuz i recently got a great pay job =]... idk whether to go k20 or type R. if u guys can help me pick with details and explinations to support ur answers please post here... also if i do go k20 is there any possible way for it to pass smog??? or at least be street legal?
personal opinion i would go b18c5 10 times outta 10....its a great motor and would be great piece of history to have...just keep your advertising to a minimal...
It really depends on how much work you wanna do. The K20 swap is going to be much more involved than the B18C5, which would just drop right in there. K20 would definitely have more cool factor, and some more power. I would keep a look out for good deals on either.
ivtec really ruins the k20. a miss shift, or over rev can destroy the motor when your running hard. the b18 will take that all day long. ever wonder why ivtec isnt on the ap1 or 2? ivtec isnt intended for all out performance. b18c5 all the way

a b18c5 would be about the same as a k20 in a teg but in a civic hatch damn will that k20 do some damage, alot more work to swap in also than a Type-R
Get jdm type-R

6th gear and the i-VTEC is worth it IMO if its not your daily driver. i-VTEC alters timing with the use of chain and sprockets so you get better low end torque and high end power without sacrificing one for the other. 6 gears give you better acceleration, better mpg, and something to do with your right hand besides beating off.
Also consider if you want to keep A/C. Most conversions do not include A/C and you also need to consider if you will pass emissions. I had the same choice to make and went B18C5. I passed emissions and power is still decent.

hmm thanks for the help guys its just what i needed... how much do the C5's go for nowadays?... and thereason why i dont wanna build up the gsr is cuz idk.. ive always wanted a type r since i was a kid... so yea... i wanna see what its like...
if you had the money to do the k swap, then i would try and find a jdm Type-r.....
motor websites are expensive
Try and find the motor around where you are located from someone or at a shop there

I gotta agree with this guy, with the money you would spend on a type r engine you can refresh your currnt engine, add some internals(rod/piston) and get a decent turbo kit and start rocking 400whp all day safely.
If you want the cool factor of having a type r engine and all of that then go ahead, but you know what they say the slow way is N/A...

if this is your daily driver and emissions isn't a problem K20 all the way. Get a k20a2 off a type s. Its well worth it. b18c5 is alright but they're still a little pricey for their age. K series are better built. They're a pricey swap but its a newer, stronger motor and you'll see more gains with mods than a B-series.
Your choice should have to be with what further mods you want to do down the road. The type R is good if you want to stay n/a. Good gas mileage cheaper parts for moding and cheaper with the swap cost i.e for the k20 ecu, exhaust header, motor mounts. K20 if you have plans for boost!!
there was a article in honda tuning a year or 2 ago B18 vs K20a it was 2 brothers with EG's the one had a si with built to **** C5 and was making 200+(i cant remember the numbers it was that long ago) and the other had a cx with a k20a stock I/H/E and his car pwned the **** out of his bros built c5..
WTH who said if you over rev the k20a it will break bwahahah IMO these motors can take way more abuse then the c5 even could, its a far more efficient motor.
IMO do the k20 swap you will be more then happy with

Stick with your gsr motor, u can fix it up and smoke k20s and still be smog legal. K20s i heard to pass smog you gotta be all stock and you got to use the gas tanks and everything of the fuel delivery of the rsx since its a returnless fuel system. Gotta do custom fabrication mostly. You'll fail though if they hook up the computer to the car. Just keep the gsr and bore it out bigger to like 82mm then get some cams and just fix it up mainly. K20s are fast stock but a b18c fixed up can be just as beastly as a k20 and even better. It depends on your goals mostly. If you want torque you can always throw a ls crank and rods in there dirt cheap.
k20 trannys aren't that great from 02-04 from what i heard as far as reliability.
