Default steering rack re-installation issues.. Please Help!!

some of you might have helped me out in my steering rack removal post but now that it is time to put it back in, the pinion doesnt want to go into the clamp in the cabin..

I have tried to widen the clamp with a screwdriver.. but it isnt really helping..

Would it be safe to tap the bottom of the steering rack with a rubber mallet?

the pinion and the clamp lign up.. it just wont go in..

any help is appreciated!!

thanks

Have you completely removed the bolt from inside the car? Although the bolt is loose, it needs to be removed to allow it to fit in. I know it seems silly, the bolt needs to be out of the "sleeve" to allow the rack rod to fit in. Just give the steering wheel a spin and it should slide right in to place.
