i searched and couldnt really find anything helpful. i am going to look at a transmission on sunday to buy it. i was wondering how you can tell the difference in a si trans and a dx trans and if theres any ways to see if it grinds. thanks
Assuming the sticker is still on it, it should say L3 which designates it being an Si transmission. my Si trans i just pulled the other day for example says "L3-2027106". and as far as i know there isn't anyway you can tell if its going to grind without installing it and going for a drive
ninja edit: dont pay attention to me. the information i got from a diff site on how to differentiate an Si trans from others was INCORRECT. these guys below know what they're talkin about

Si, DX, HF and ZC (I think) all say L3. There used to be a picture showing how far the differential would rotate when the input shaft was turned while in a certain gear, but I can't find it anymore. Some pack rat around here (mista?) might have it.

look above the oil fill, there is a stamp that will say PL3/####
PL3/A### = small bearing case - DX/HF/STD
PL3/B000 = large bearing - SI/ZC
PL3/3000/6000/9000 = large bearing - SI/ZC
as for clutches, as long as you have a 90-91 flywheel it will use a 90-91 SI clutch. unless the trans is an '88(21 spline input shaft)

Doesn't matter, only way to tell is using the method described above. There's also no way to tell if there are going to be grinds without cracking it open.
Try and see if you hear any grinding noises coming from the input shaft as well, that would be an indicator of bearing wear.
I would just rebuild it anyways, but that's me
