Very well could be. Really, CART was kicking the crap out of the IRL until the people that ran CART starting making some idiotic decisions that sank the ship. But really, the only thing that kept IRL alive for so long was that they had the Indy 500 to shore them up.
In this case, DMG has the Daytona 200, but that race is next to irrelevant, much the same way the Grand Am Daytona 24 is irrelevant when compared to the 12 Hours of Sebring (Sebring had something like 3 or 4 times the number of spectators this year).
The big question will be where the manufacturers line up. If all four of them plus Ducati stick together, DMG is going to have a really hard time. If the manufacturers can't build a strong coalition this could drag out for some time. I think the thing that will kill DMG is that they don't have a product that the majority of the fans support. Even if Kawasaki and Yamaha side with them, I'd much rather watch 1000 cc Superbikes in their rightful place as the premier class. I know Ducati would like this too, as would BMW, KTM, and Aprilia.

yup good points.
i think the forthcoming ape, KTM and bmw superbikes could make yamaha and kawi irrelevant if they choose to break from the rest. (which i don't think either have the ***** to do)--that being said, DMG could very well sell a different product, which is spec bike racing, w/ a cooperative OEM, liveried to be unrecognizable...but other than the money they'd be willing to spend on promotion, they're at a serious disadvantage without the built in brand loyalties inherent in motorcycle racing.
it hurts DMG that AMA SBK was as weak as it was before acquisition. i think that DMG had some good ideas (spec fuel/tire) but are running way too far with it.

I think this is only really a threat to the DMG, I don't see the manufactures themselves trying to start a new series, they all aren't going to get on board. If suzuki and honda really leave ama, that leaves kawasaki and yamaha to win some titles. I remember a superbike planet interview with dingbat, er dingmen and he said he didn't care if anybody left

sounds like DMG and edmondson are going to have to suck some humble dick if they want racing.
i guess they could go with a spec yam series and make it nascrap, but i'd watch American WSBK style racing before the DMG spectacle.
