Default automatic 89 civic hatch, transmission issues.

My GF owns this car and we noticed it gets awful MPG's. if we are lucky we get 250-270 miles from a full tank. I also noticed it slips a bit when accelerating from a dead stop. especially when going from 1st- 2nd. its got about 200,000 miles on it and was sitting for a while before she bought it. Could it be the trans or anything else cause it to get shitty gas milage? I did a tune up on it no more than a month ago and did everything except the fule filter. Has new plugs ( ngk's ), oil, oil filter, air filter, new timing belt, water pump. Could it be the torque converter? I dont know much about auto trans as all my EF's have all been stick. That and i know how much of a pain Auto trans can be.

thanks in advance!

also, if tranny end up being the culprit, where can i find a good used one locally in the L.A area? anyone have one laying around?

the gas mileage wont be as good as a stick can tell you. i have a 91 auto and its ok. the tranny could be going with that slip you mentioned. i would say to drain the tranny fluid and replace it with Honda brand atf. if it gets better do it again after 1000 miles. i had an accord that did the same thing and the problem went away by doing this. almost every honda around this age dosent do too well with regular atf.

I had the same problem in my 89 DX auto except it would slip from 2nd to 3rd. I bought another auto trans off of a local guy for 100 bucks. Fixed it right up Getting 35 MPG when I'm not trying to save gas. Best was 43.
