I have a car from japan that i am trying to get inspected and my mechanic is telling me that when he hooks the car the ecu tells dmv the VIN on the car is this true ?

Is it possible to hook up another car or will the DMV see that it is a different car?

This car would pass but the JDM ECU's can't communicate with USDM readers. It just says "error cannot communicate" when you hook up a scan tool to it.

I have searched and there is NO answer some say yes some say no does anyone one know for sure cause i need this car legal.

what kind of car? ob-0 or 1 i doubt it. im not too sure about ob-2

 

It's a 1996 Honda Integra Type R from Japan. OBDII I believe.

ok, ALL USDM OBD2 96-00 civic and integras do not store the VIN# in the ECU. This is a myth. (Some VERY new cars, however, do store VIN#, exactly what cars I don't know, I do know some toyotas do) You can swap different cars on the new OBD2 inspection stations BUT try to stay with the same generation model. I've done it multiple times at a friends shop. Your JDM OBD2 integra will fail emissions because of the different protocol. It does not use the ISO 9141 protocol.

I have had my car inspected about 4 times with the "new OBD2 inspection" and each time with a different ecu in my car. My car is a 00 civic, I have used a 98 civic ecu, 00 civic ecu (auto trans), 00 civic ecu (manual trans) and 2 different 98 USDM Type R ECU's (P73)

Does it have any sort of ID number in the ECU to make it specific to a car?

My car currently wont pass because it cant be read by a scan tool. If I put in a USDM ECU can a scan tool read from a JDM car? I am asking is the error the scan tool gets from the ECU or from the car? If its the ECU I will swap ecu's, if it is the car then I dont know.

 

JDM ecu's are not readable with scan tools. You need a USDM ECU and it will read scan tool.

Ok so now my next question is if I put in a USDM ECU into a JDM ITR is it going to throw codes? The sensors and emissions stuff is different on JDM engines right? If i can swap ECU's and not gets codes so they can read the car then I would be done but I have heard the oil pump CKFS pully and sensor, secondary 02, EGR valve, VTEC pressure switch, Knock sensor and coolant switch are all different in JDM engines.

Will this throw codes or is it plug and play?

You need some of those sensors you just splurted out, but there are ways for "tricking" some of them. Mainly the CKF sensor and vtec pressure switch.

In addition to a conversion harness, those are the only two things I had to do to get a USDM OBD2A P72 GSR ecu to work on my JDM B18C OBD1 engine in an OBD2B 99 Civic EX. I was able to pass emissions just fine.

As for the secondary O2 sensor, I'd get a usdm cat w/ o2 sensor and add wires to your harness.

its a theft deterrent device in the ecu, it makes it so only one key with the right chip in it can start the car, it makes it harder to steal

 

The immobilizer is basically a chip in the ECU that recognizes a RFID chip that is in a key in the ignition. If the key ain't in the ignition, the car won't start. Thieves have figured out how to bypass immobilizers and a lot of insurance companies refuse to believe that is the case. Consequently, they deny claims of theft because they believe it is impossible to move a car that is equipped with an immobilizer.
