Default Leaking Oil Pressure Sending Unit

I have a 1991 Accord LX and finally found my oil leak. It looks to be coming from the oil pressure sending unit. My questions are:

1. Do I have to remove the oil filter to get to it or will there be room?

2. Do I need to replace the unit or can I simply use Teflon Tape on the threads and reinstall it?

3. It seems like this leak has caused oil to go everywhere on the bottom of my engine. Is this pretty common or is it possible I have another leak?

4. What causes this to leak? Should I look inot another issue after I fix this?

I have tried using the search function here and it never pulls up results. I finally got frustrated with it and decided to post.

Thanks

1. removing the oil filter will give you more room to work but it probably isn't needed.

2. you may not need to replace the unit, just put some HondaBond HT on the threads and reinstall. HondaBond can be bought at the Honda dealership.

3. It's somewhat common I suppose. The unit is probably your only leak but doesn't hurt to double check. Clean the block with degreaser, drive around bit and check back to see if any more oil is leaking.

4. not sure really... time? The sealant on the threads finally gives out so you need to re-seal it I guess.

not sure why you weren't able to find anything about this using the search feature, seems to have been discussed/mentioned quite a few times over the last few months. Oh well though, hope that helps.

Thanks! Not sure why search isn't working for me. No matter what I tried it came back as no results.

Also, do you think I could use permatex instead of the HondaBond? I already have Permatex and since I am on a very tight budget it would help.

yeah, it should work fine. There is actually a permatex that lists the Honda part number as an equivalent, don't recall which but I know it's gray.

Okay thanks. I have some Ultra Black that is some hardcore stuff.

I just figured out my search problem. I had new threads clicked instead of archived so every search came up with nothing. Now it seems to work.

Thanks Again.

dont use ultra black, i dont think it's seal off liquids well, just get some ultra grey, it's pretty much like hondabond.

my oil pressure sending unit leaked in my 95 accord and it was good for about a month after i took old one out and used honda bond HT. After it started leaking again i bought a new one put honda bond on threads and been good since. Went on a 4 hr road trip and back with no oil leaking at all.

Good info guys. I went and bought a new OPS yesterday. I have been searching about using the Ultra Black and I doon't think it will be good to use. I will go pick up some Ultra Grey.

yeah, the grey is what I think has the Honda part number listed on it as an equivalent. Ultra black does seal liquid though, I think it's for high temp oil applications IIRC. I know I used it for that before and it's been fine, though on my Honda's I use HondaBond.

90% of the time, the unit self is the problem, not the threads. Removing the oil filter can make it easier, but not necessary if you have a deep enough socket. When you're done, spray it all down with brake cleaner to reduce the amount of oil that will burn off or be spread onto the road

Alright I got it swapped out without any problems. Looks like the leak there has stopped.

Now, right below the oil pressure switch is a black hose that runs up to the engine. When I looked up to where it connects to the engine I noticed a small drip of oil near it. Anyone know where this leak could be coming from?

Hi,
Where is your oil leak dropping from? I got a leak today and it's looks like dripping from right under the transmission. Since I cannot jack my car very high, I just clean it up to see if I can see where it's coming from.
How much oil is yours leaking? Would a leak from here dry out the oil in the engine?
Thanks,

Is there a DIY guide that I can follow? It's easier to replace if the oil filter is removed. If I remove the oil filter, wouldn't that means I have to change the oil after the sending unit is replaced right? If I don't remove the oil filter, do I still have to change the oil since taking off the sending unit, oil would rush out and thus like draining the oil right? What kind of sealant should I use to put the unit in?
Thanks.
