How do you get a used bike home when you buy it
So lets say you find a bike on craigslist go out and buy it. How do you get it home? Obviously ride it, tow it or get it towed. But lets say its a 2 hour drive so towing will be way too much anyway. The title gets signed over right away but how do you deal with the lack of plates? Do I ask the seller to let me borrow the plates and then send/drive them back? Is my only option to somehow tow it or is there a way I can drive it back? Obviously I could just hope I don't get pulled over and risk getting the ticket, but is there a more legal approach?
I know it is a dumb question, but I figured I would ask it before I am standing in someone's driveway with the keys and title to my new bike but now idea how to get it home.

u give him a deposit or pay in full he gives u title and then u head to the dmv to register it in ur name and get ur tags. get a buddy to drive u back over and ride ur new back home.
i have a trailer so it comes home with me asap.

it might be different from state to state but in Iowa after you buy any vehicle, as long as you have the title and copy of insurance your can drive or ride it for upto 30 days before plates have to get put on. check out your local mvd website should tell you what your state offers
In certain states (ie NE) the plates stay with the previous owner but you can still ride the bike for 30 days with no tags. You just need copy of bill of sale, insurance, and possibly the signed title (not 100% on the title).

in jersey when ur buying a bike off a private owner it has to be insured. ur best bet is the person selling the bike still has it insured and registered and he lets u ride it home, then u drop off his info afterwards. i did that once, but i mainly trailor them.

Its not that I don't want to. In NY the plates stay with the driver (I believe), so I did not want to get pulled over and have my bike towed and ticketed for that when I buy the bike.
So if I have the title and a bill of sale written up do you think I will be fine if I do get pulled over? Thanks for the answers guys.

I am positive that there is a period of time in all states that is given to get everything squared away after getting a new vehicle.

Do you have a friend that has a truck? If so borrow the truck and get two people to ride with you to pick it up. When you get there take the four people and load it in the back of the truck.
Or call DMV and ask them. If they say its fine to ride with no LP get the DMV code that says so, so when the cop pulls you, you can tell him who you talked to and give them the code they said to go by.

Check for temporary transfer tags with your state DMV, thats what we have in VA
And do NOT use another vehicles tags. A guy bought a car from me a few years back, slapped some random tags on there, got pulled for speeding and the cop impounded the car because of the tags, even though he had a signed over title and bill of sale.

You have to check your state DMV's regulations. Best bet is to call a local DMV office and ask.
If you're buying it in-state, some states can transfer the title and issue you a plate on the spot at a messenger service or notary. In PA you can do this if you provide proof of insurance.
I bought mine out-of-state (about 2.5 hour drive), but PA does not do temporary transport tags like some other states, so I borrowed my brother's Ford pickup to haul it home and registered it later.

In all state there is a grace period. In stated were insurance is required you must have the bike insured but in ALL state there is a grace period for registartion for exactly this reason. In some states its a few days others you have 30 but if you purchase it that day and drive it home you will be fine. THey may want to run the vin quick but thats it you will not recive a ticket.

Because everyone owns a pickup or has a friend with a pickup truck. I don't understand either.

Do yourself a favor.... stop asking people on a forum. Call up your local DMV or go by their office and ASK SOMEONE WHO KNOWS what the laws are in your state!
Are you going to take someone’s advice that lives in Cali (for example) for a law pertaining to YOUR state?

I would expect better flames from you, this is not your best work. I've read a fraction of your posts, a large portion of which are flames and this is definitely not your best material. Your logic fails when you draw the conclusion that this post links me to not having friends with pickups, and spending all my time on the internet. Sure, I don't have the most friends out of people on this site but I have plenty good ones, none of whom happen to own a pickup because their lives do not warrant one. I am sorry I do not go around making friends with hill-billy folk such as yourself who can truck around bikes for me all day long (notice here I am using your logic: you own a pickup -> you are a hill-billy
). Maybe you should make some friends instead of trying to alienate everyone that visits this site all day long. I await your rebuttal

I believe this forum exists for people such as myself to share and discuss topics relating to motorcycles. I am therefor using this forum properly. I know that calling the DMV is better than asking here but I work 45-60 hour weeks during which I do not have time to call the DMV and find out what I need. So for convenience sake I asked here because there are folks that have experience in this field of knowledge. I know laws differ but is there a chance that someone from New York is on here and knows the answer?
If no one asked questions here then what would warrant the existence of the site and where would there be people for you to flame? Seriously, I hope you let it all out here and don't explode on people in real life
I eagerly await more flames
