Default OEM Type R LSD in Cable B16 Tranny

Is this a possible combination? If so does anyone know what ring gear you'd need to make this work? It seems as though that would be the major concern. I have a cable B16 tranny with brand new gearspeed syncro's and I'd like to use it but I am in desperate need of an LSD. I found an OEM Type R LSD for $150 from a friend but he says I can't make it work in that tranny and now he has me doubting it.

It works, I just finished putting mine together. You need to have a YS1 cable tranny though, a S1/Y1/J1 will not work. You have to cut some of the ribs around the diff away to clear the LSD.

You can see in this pic where I cut some of the tabs out. I actually cut out a little more because I was trying to use a GSR open diff when I first started the project a few months ago. The open diff will not fit, neither will a K20A2 diff (I tried both).

Here is the tranny assembled:

I used 99-00 B16 gears 1-4, 1993 LS 5th from my other YS1, ITR OEM 10 bolt LSD and 4.40 final drive. The 14-bolt ITR S80 differential fits as well, I test fitted it as I had one before I decided to use the 10 bolt.

The ring gear must be either for a 4.40 or 4.78 FD, and you can't use one from a 99-00 Si B16 tranny. I know there is a lot of mixed info on that particular final drive. Honda lists it as a 4.26, but I have personally taken it apart and found a 4.40. It shares the same smaller inner diameter and bolt pattern with the smaller LS (YS1) 4.26 ring gears, but if you count the teeth it's a 4.40. Anyway, it won't work.

If you are looking for a YS1 case, I have a bare case that was from a 93 LS, I took the 5th gear out and I just left the case empty. I also have a bunch of spare bearings and seals for it.

Well the casing I have is a B17 but the gearset is B16 Cable. I haven't checked the casing numbers so I'm not sure. What else other than the diff itself will I need?

So you have a JDM XSi B16 tranny, which is the same as the B17A1 tranny. The case is identical to the other YS1 LS case. If you just want to add the LSD, you need to get the LSD and a final drive set that fits it. Just notch out the case as I said and install it.
