Default Tranny went out in 02 LX: Honda wants $2,600 to replace!

A friend of mine has a 2002 Civic LX (automatic). The tranny has been acting up as it would get to 3k rpm, then downshift and then jump back up to between 3-4k rpms.

I have not seen the car so I am guessing these are harsh jumps with the RPM's.

Anyhow, one Honda stealership wants $2,600 to replace the tranny. The car is with a 2nd stealership getting another quote.

Are these trannies dime a dozen at the salvage yards? What do you guys recommend?

I'm a K series guy Thanks for any help

You could probably get one for about $800 - $1000 at a salvage yard.

I have a auto tranny from my car. Its a 2004 lx w/ 35k on it. No neutral drops, tranny shifts good with no slippage. Replaced it when i did my 5spd swap. IDK what it will take to ship it out to ya tho. Maybe hit me up with a zipcode and ill work something out.

the 01-02 auto trans is ****, get an 04-05, they are better, but not great, and get a used one from a salvage with low mileage, dont get a rebuilt, or a new one, its not worth it, u could get 3 for the price of one rebuilt

The Honda dealership is saying the 01-02 tranny is not compatible with the 03-05 trannies due to a change with the transmission. Is this ?

IDK, I have a manual, all my bearings and real main seal were replaced for just under a $1K. It will be time to replace the clutch in about a year or to, but I hope to be KSwapped by then

yes that's bs. you can bolt up any trans from 01-05 and it will work. 04-05 having the better built trannies

2,600 for parts and labor? Fack, go for it.

roughly 1K for the labor sans misc parts, so they are charging roughly 1400-1600 for a brand new trans. You could take it somewhere and have it rebuilt for about 2K, but if they are swapping in a new factory unit I would just bite the bullet.

Just as an FYI of cost, its about 4K for a Rebuilt 3000gt AWD Trans, and thats without the labor to install. So count your blessings. ^^

LOL thats like compairing a rebuilt B15 tranny to a Skyline tranny, of course the 3KGT is going to be more. They are few and far between as is. I mean even subie trannies are *** expensive.

not worth it. i can get that trans for 150, you can get it for 700 or below. get it and swap it though to take the trans out in this car you have to take the subframe down. **** if i was close to you id do it all for 800-1000$. for 4k i can buy a civic in exxelent condition of the same year
